First Christmas – Slayers

Posted on Oct 11 2010

While Kibs takes a break from Anime Bites, I’m here to provide my own video reviews. This week, we’ll look at the vintage classic that is Slayers.

Slayers – Episode 01 – ANGRY? Lina’s Furious Dragon Slave!

Text review time!

Since this is an older series, you can really see that old hand-drawn style in the animation. Not only that, but you tend to see examples of still image fade-outs and recycled animation to fill time. Several other older series had this, but that’s just part of what makes it classic.

I can’t say I’m too big of a fan of the background music, but almost every opening and closing song for this franchise is done by Megumi Hayashibara, so points there. It’s not one of the strongest points I’ve seen thus far though.

I can’t see too much of a plot set up in the first episode, but with a franchise that spans over 100 episodes with 5 series has to have something to tell. All I can really say for sure is that there will be more dragons, which is always a good thing.

I only see two main characters so far, but I’ve heard that Crispin Freeman voices one at some point, so I’ll be on the lookout. Lina and Gourry have a nice relationship so far, despite the misunderstanding with their initial meeting. I’m also a little thrown off to hear Eric Stuart’s voice on any character that isn’t Brock from Pokemon or Seto Kaiba.

Wrapping Up
While not really showing too much of an overall plot, Slayers has me wondering what’s next. Especially as a classic series that has such a well known foundation, I can’t help but want to watch everything related to it. If you haven’t gotten the chance to check out this classic, give it a go.

You can watch the first episode of Slayers on Funimation’s video portal where you can download it to own for yourself. The boxset is no longer available via RightStuf, but you can find it on Amazon.
