EagleEyes’ Round Table – Video Games

Posted on Aug 11 2010

From the dawn of time (well… at least before I was born) there have existed video games. This week we find out who is rolling in achievements and who’s vibrating features have been disabled. We head from NES to PS3 with every stop in between, on this very special video game edition of EagleEyes’ Round Table . Also make sure to read below to find how you can win some very cool prizes!

Weekly award – Week 14:

Don’t Keep Trollin, Trollin, Trollin Award – Internet Behavior

After recovering from the awesomeness that was that Limp Bizkit reference, we must ask ourselves, what persuades someone to utilize their time solely to discourage others? What drives someone to be a nuisance, a spammer, a flamer or an annoying twit? Are they born this way or do they develop an inner turmoil that eats away at them and forces them to metamorphosis into the emblematic stain on the underpants of life…?

So is the life of an internet troll! Sadly, the likelihood of these questions being answered, is the same as me somehow managing to claim ruler-ship of the world… Unlikely, very unlikely. Now take this award you bridge dwelling fiends and get off my interwebs.

—————————————————————————————

Now for the Round Table rules: As usual, each participant is given a series questions covering various aspects in anime, manga, and Japanese culture. Each individual then has to provide their opinion on the said issue. Finally, I hold B to stop my Squirtle evolving.

    Our Participants today are:

  • Amui- Bang Shishigami
  • TheNinja4759 – Carl Clover
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – Ragna The Bloodedge
  • JinnRemona – Jin Kisaragi
  • Zehutsumei – Taokaka
  • deadlymustach50 – Arakune
  • ZshadowX – Hakumen

When did you first start gaming, and what is your earliest memories?

  • Amui- I first started gaming in the heyday of the Nintendo 64, I remember playing Mario Party and Banjo Kazooie so much that the terrible N64 controller gave me blisters and I had to stop for long periods.
  • TheNinja4759 – I first started gaming when I was at the young age of 4. I remember getting home from school, and every day until my first NES died, I would play Battletoads until it was time for dinner, then going to play Super Mario Bros till bedtime.
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – I first started gaming when I was around 8 or 9, my mom didn’t want to deal with me being bored all the time, so she bought me a Nintendo 64. The first game I got was Super Mario 64, I remember knowing nothing about the game at all… lol it took me a week to figure out you had to jump in the picture to get to the first level, and after that I couldn’t figure out how to get the first star. So me and my dad just had competitions to see how many coins we could get from that level, it was really fun playing with him. That game is one of my favorites, and actually I just recently figured out where the 120th star was this year ^^”
  • JinnRemona – I started gaming when I was about 6, and my mother bought me an SNES for Christmas. My earliest memory with that system was the next day, when she rented us a copy of Aladdin, and I beat it that very night.
  • Zehutsumei – I first started gaming when I was around 5 years old, my first real console being a Playstation. The earliest gaming memory I have is playing Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and sucking pretty bad…
  • deadlymustach50 – My parents deprived me of gaming, something about it rotting your brain. I don’t know, but onto the story. I was about seven or eight when I had my first big experience with gaming. I was a huge fan of the Pokemon series, both the cards and show. So for Christmas I received the Special Edition Pokemon Gamboy with the Pikachu Edition Pokemon game. I played that game forever, infact I have the the Gameboy and game here somewhere. Those two gifts open the doors to the gaming world and I’ve been gaming ever since.
  • ZshadowX – My very first console that I ever had was a Nes, but boy that was when I was three or two so I don’t remember that much just that I played super Mario 3 or was it Duck Hunt?. After that I got a SNES and a Sega Genesis ( my mom spoiled me) and pretty much I play a lot more with the Snes then the Genesis. Lets see for the Genesis I play Power Ranger the Move and Sonic. As for the SNES I played Super Mario All-Stars and Donkey Kong Country but never got a chance to pass it. You know, I have about ten SNES and just five Genesis games, once again I was 4 or 5 so I didn’t understand much The Playstation is when I really started gaming, I remember playing Megaman Legends 1 and 2, oh and FFVIII but got real bored quick so, I played Parappa the Rappa, UmJammer Lammy, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Metal Gear Solid, Gundam Wing Assault, Digimon, Megaman X 4, and my all time Favorite was Brave Fencer Musashi. Just wow, I consider that game a classic masterpiece.

Is there any game series that you would like to see remade or have a sequel made for?

  • Amui- Star Ocean, TRI-ACE GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND GIVE US A GOOD STAR OCEAN ALREADY, Like SO3.Or update SO1/2 with new graphics onto the 360/PS3 or even PSP.
  • TheNinja4759 – Sin & Punishment just came out with a sequel, which made me very excited. Obviously they need to do a remake of Battletoads, since it is a fantastic game, and I wouldn’t mind a new Pokemon TCG.. I loved the first one when it came out on the GBC, so a remake would be wonderful.
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – I have to say I’ve been waiting for Pikmin 3 for a very long time anxiously waiting for it to come out, I was so sad when they didn’t announce it during E-3 this year T~T but I must say I’m really excited for the 3-D remake of “The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of time” on the 3-DS. In my opinion, that will always be the best game ever made.
  • JinnRemona – Legend of Dragoon is my choice for this one. It was a brilliant game back in the day, and enhanced graphics and some new and improved battle mechanics would make it even better then it already is.
  • Zehutsumei – I would normally say Okami, but oh snap! Okamiden! To be honest though, I’m not quite sure what game I want remade. Chrono Trigger was already remade. I think I would want Darkstalkers to be remade or ported in HD on XBL, so at least I can play people competitively and legally *cough*MAME*cough*
  • deadlymustach50 – One game I want to be remade is Goldeneye 007. Wait did you say something? OH THAT’S RIGHT! ITS ALREADY HERE! Nintendo showed an exclusive clip of the remastered Goldeneye 007 at E3 2010. It will be released this November exclusively to the Wii and possibly the DS.
  • ZshadowX – The one game I like to see rise from the grave will be Megaman Legends, You see at the end of Megaman Legends 2 {SPOIL ALERT} Megaman got stuck in a planet, so you never get to see if he escape or did he just stay there, oh while Roll and Tronne were building a Rocket ship to try to get Megaman back, did they get him? Did it work? Who knows { End of SPOIL ALER} so ya, I want my questions answer now Capcom.

When do you expect word on the next generation of consoles, how long do you expect the current gen to last?

  • Amui- The next generation of consoles will be announced on December 21st 2012, and oddly that will be the same day the current gen runs out!
But srsbsns time, who knows? I still play my PS2 and buy games for it all the time.
Of course the giant companies will want moar shiny moneystuffs, so I expect something from Sony/Microsoft shortly.
  • TheNinja4759 – With E3 closing a little over a month ago, and Nintendo bring the 3DS to America, I feel as though the next generation is coming very soon. I think with the way technology is moving forward, it won’t be long before the curreng generation of gaming moves forward. I give it about 10 years.
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – I think the Wii will be around for a long time, they’ve made it have such a wide variety of customers. I will be looking forward to Nintendo’s next installment of software though. The Wii doesn’t have many good games, but with the new titles coming out like The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, I think Nintendo will rush to put out it’s best before the Wii is replaced by a new system.
  • JinnRemona – I give it five to ten years before we can even expect to see a hint of a new generation of games. The current Generation is very well made, and are easily upgradable, so finding a good time to make a new generation of consoles will be tough.
  • Zehutsumei – Not for a while, that’s for sure. These consoles are only in the middle of their infancy. Releasing a new console now would be idiotic. The current generation of consoles will last easily another 2-3 years, maybe more.
  • deadlymustach50 – I honestly don’t know, there are to many factors to help determine when the new generation of consoles will appear. The big thing this year for the consoles was the motion capturing. Nintendo really first captured it with its Wii, and the others followed suit. Playstation introduced their PlaystationMove which basically looks like the Wii’s remotes with a ball on the top of it. and Microsoft finally released their Kinect (or Natal Project) with its controller-free motion (plus the Xbox Slim). Both the systems use a motion capturing camera, which is just the remastered eyetoy. The gaming industry is really trying changing the gaming experience with motion capturing and 3D (Nintendo’s 3DS), but I don’t think its enough to produce a new generation of consoles at the time.
  • ZshadowX – I bet my life that the next Gen will be sometime in 2013, hmm for about 3 or 4 years perhaps.

Are there any innovations or gimmicks that have not yet been made or implemented that you would like to see introduced? Would this be as an additional item, or the main gimmick of a console?

  • Amui- I, like many others, am way too lazy to move my fingers to push that ONE SHOULDER BUTTON!
So I want those awesome hats that read your brains signals and send them to the console, this would have to be the main gimmick of the console of course.
  • TheNinja4759 – You know, I think the current systems have implemented just about everything. We got Sports and just about everything else coming to the 360, Sony has Blu-Ray, and with Netflix coming to the Wii, watching movies has never been easier. Now, I would like to see a 360 make me a sandwich, or a PS3 tell me that I need to take the dog out.
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – I’m looking forward to virtual reality, and I’m sure it’s not too far away. Nintendo made another step forward to it with the hands on action of the Wii, and honestly, I think that the next console of Nintendo will be entirely based on virtual reality.
  • JinnRemona – The best one I can think of would be 3D, but with the upcoming Nintendo 3DS, that dream may soon come to be realized. Hopefully Nintendo does not go overboard, and ruin what could be a very amazing handheld.
  • Zehutsumei – I would personally want to see another stab at the Virtual Reality concept. Other than that though, just give me a controller and I’m fine.
  • deadlymustach50 – I don’t have any innovations, but if I did it would be the EXTINCTION OF THE RED RING OF DEATH! You happily return home to play a great game after a hard day of work and then “BOOM” RED RING OF DEATH! A system failure in the first two years is 23.7% for Xbox 360, and they tried to stop it with the Slim, but no you’re still there! Sorry had to get it off my chest.
  • ZshadowX – I will like to see games that can be played by in 3D…. oh right Nintendo 3DS….Nevermind my problem has been answer… thank you Nintendo.

Is there a favorite game of yours that you would like to suggest to the fanatics? What makes this game so special to you?

  • Amui- Star Ocean: Till the End of Time: Just my favorite game ever made, the battle system makes me drool, item creation is perfected, characters (other than Roger) are all pretty much win….
Did i mention it has multiple plot twists? Because it does.
  • TheNinja4759 – I have 2 favorite games actually. The first, obviously being Pokemon HG and SS. After 10+ years since the release of Pokemon Gold and Silver, which I think made the Pokemon franchise EXPLODE into the mega powerhouse that it is today, it would do great justice to replay the games that, again, made the Pokemon series where it is today. My second favorite game OF ALL TIME is Marvel vs Capcom 1: Clash of Super Heroes. Yea, you are going to have to either dust that PSX off, or try to find a copy SOMEWHERE to play it, but with a fantastic line up of wonderful characters, and some of the most dedicated fans out there, it’s a great fighter to kill the weekend playing. I remember back in middle school, I would always win the weekly tourny with my favorite team(s): Strider Hiryu and Megaman, or Wolverine and Gambit. Go pick them up, and relive that which I consider the greatest moments in gaming history.
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – Like I said, my absolute favorite game is The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. It was my 5th game and it took me a year to beat. The story line is incredible, and I find myself returning to it time and time again for another play through. I recommend that whoever plans to buy the 3-DS buys the re-make. I have the original and even just talking about it makes me want to play it again. I also enjoyed the little easter eggs throughout the game like how Talon and Ingo are based off of Mario and Luigi, and how you can see a Bowser bolo tie on Talon to confirm this fact.
  • JinnRemona – Again, I would have to say Legend of Dragoon. The game is the most well known game around, as whenever I’ve tried bringing it up in other forums, and to friends, they have no clue as to what it is. So yeah. Legend of Dragoon. Unique battle system, yet still simple enough to make it comfortable, and an amazing story with great graphics(For that time at least)
  • Zehutsumei – Okami, hands down. The art style, the unique gameplay, the memorable characters, the humour, the puzzles, the music, the atmosphere, the Rareware feel of the voice acting… I could go on…
  • deadlymustach50 – Well recently I just got Starcraft II, and i have to say its the best RTS game out there. I recommend it to everyone, and PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB had a great review of the beta in forums. Why would I suggest this game, well first off it cost over $100 million, and its apparent the dedication they took to produce this game. It has a great single player campaign that makes you feel like a real changing factor in a war. Also the multiplayer is amazing with 50 unranked practice rounds to help you get into the game, and provides a great experience of RTS.
  • ZshadowX – Well I like to suggest Pokemon, but I’m pretty sure most the fanatics love pokemon, grew up with Pokemon, what can I say.

What is your favorite console of this generation? What makes it stand out amongst the competitors?

  • Amui- I can’t say any console this generation has really earned a place in my “favorites”, but if i really had to choose then I would say the XBox 360 just for the fact that it had Tales of Vesperia before the PS3, and it has quite a few console exclusive JRPGs that are interesting to say the least.
  • TheNinja4759 – My favorite console of this generation so far is the Nintendo DS. No region locks, portability, and being the most popular handheld gaming system makes it stand out among the PSP. Also, it has Pokemon. Does PSP have Pokemon? That’s what I thought.
  • Dophanes “D!” Raosuke – Although I don’t like how there aren’t many good titles for the Wii, the few good ones that it does have are great! You prolly realize by now that Im a big Zelda fan, but Twilight Princess was a fantastic game, and other titles like Metroid Prime 3 Corruption, and Super Mario Galaxy make the Wii worth buying all by themselves.
  • JinnRemona – I’d have to say the Wii. Though I greatly enjoy the Xbox 360, I enjoy alot of games for the Wii instead, and with the upcoming Metroid: Other M, my favouritism just increases even more.
  • Zehutsumei – All three consoles are completely equal in their own right. The Wii, Xbox 360, and the PS3 all have their ups and downs when it comes to hardware, games, and capabilities. I would have to lean towards the PS3 by a hair, only because it’s far more customizable and less lenient then Hitl- I mean Microsoft…
  • deadlymustach50 – I plead the fifth. I’ve played all consoles and enjoy them all. Also if your a gamer you should be able to play any console, anytime, anywhere.
  • ZshadowX – Okay, okay… Don’t get mad or upset, but my favorite console would be the Wii. Why you may ask? Let’s just say that it’s because I been a Nintendo fanboy forever. I own a Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance / SP, DSLite, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, and a Wii. Sure, I have a PSX, PS2, PSP, and a PS3 slim, but the one console that I keep coming back for more is the Wii, it’s probably because I’m also a Legend Of Zelda fan.

You mean Zero isn’t going to try and win Pokemon stuffz 😮

  • Leviathan Mist August 11, 2010 at 9:01 PM

That’s a tough question. Normally I’d be inclined to say Leviathan, but the prinnies from Disgaea really stand out to me because they’re hilarious creatures! Also, they look like penguins, and that’s awesome.

  • grimdefeat August 11, 2010 at 9:05 PM

my favorite video game character is probally Arthas Menethil/The Lich King from Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft Wrath of The Lich King
because I love the story of how he slowly went from a great paladin to the evil and powerful Lich King.
ps. patrick seitz plays him in WoW 🙂

  • Camajak August 11, 2010 at 9:10 PM

It’s amazingly difficult for me to choose a Vidja game character, but, I think I’ll have to go with… Link. I really don’t know why, but he was the first person I thought of, and I guess looking now, he’s probably my favorite! I would choose him, since he has so much going for him. Great plots, great courage, great fighting, and that’s just in one of the many, many games that he’s been in! Every game he has something different to put on the table, like a hookshot, or a new boat, or maybe he has an underlying love interest? Though he’s a man of few words, he’s managed to charm his way into my heart through every sequel, stand-alone, or remake.

  • Drago142222 August 11, 2010 at 9:11 PM

ok mine would be Zack Fair from Crisis core because his charecter felt like he could of been more alot more but yea sad ending

  • Jubilee August 11, 2010 at 9:26 PM

Xiao from Darkcloud…she is a kitty…who drinks a potion…and turns into a little girl. She also uses a slingshot, and I basically beat the game with her single-handedly (minus the required floors). She also has the best voice overs ever, as she goes “Eh” “Oh!” and my favorite “Eh…HEY!” =D

  • Zero Gravity August 11, 2010 at 9:27 PM

    Ehhh….
Volkner, from PokéMon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. he shows that he rules the Gym Leaders by using my favorite type, Electric types. He’s a calm and collected person and had a real story for once in the PokéMon games, considering every trainer other then the villains (for obvious reasons) is a happy go lucky battle frenzied character. Volkner is just unhappy with battling and finds it boring, in need of a refreshment. Once you (the main character) defeat him, yeah he kinda goes to like all the other characters but he’s still just for me the best. He has the power to back up his bark. He’s just my favorite gym leader.

  • dbull620 August 11, 2010 at 10:01 PM

Vergil from Devil May Cry 3, hands down. He’s cool, calm, and collected for the most part. He’s very goal oriented and he won’t let anything get in his way. And if you happen to piss him off, you’re in for a severe beating. Heck, he can summon swords out of thin air and hurl them at you or choose to make a protective ring of swords surround him. Best thing about those summoned swords is that he’s able to summon/hurl the swords even while evading or while attacking with whatever melee weapon he has equipped (I don’t see Dante firing his guns while evading or slashing away at an opponent!). Oh, and did I mention he can teleport to close the gap between himself and his opponent? Also, I really like how when you face against Vergil as Dante, you really get the feeling that Vergil is the more powerful of the two, as it takes a lot of strategy to take him down. Overall, I’ve never felt more badass in a game than while playing as Vergil in the special edition of Devil May Cry 3. All of these things easily makes Vergil my favorite character of all time. Oh and by the way EagleEyes, I’d like to get in on the next round table you’ve got.

  • AnarchoElk August 13, 2010 at 12:47 AM

The reader question is too hard! I can’t just pick a favorite character…

So I’ll just respond to the Rebels:

    1. As far as I know, my early favorites were SKIING and HOCKEY on the Atari, but my uncle stoled them ;_; Though my earliest memories are original mario, and joust on atari, as well as kung fu on C64.

    2. Kid Icarus was one that I was always hoping for, (YAY!) And I would LOVE another Mother game, but that won’t happen.

    3. Nintendo announced their secret (because they don’t want MS and Sony to shamelessly steal from them again) console is under Dev right now, and the 3DS is on it’s way, honestly I could care less about MS and Sony’s sequels, though I hope Sony stops sucking…

    4. Virtual Reality. Not those skintight suit things though, the plug it into your brain matrix style stuff. Bring on the singularity!

    5. Mother 3, though you need to know Japanese or have funky equipment to play it. Stupid NoA refusing to take out money… It’s a beautiful story, closest thing to true art in videogames.

    6. My favorite CONSOLE is the Wii, unfortunately my favorite games are on the 360. Stupid devs, not making good games for the Wii…

  • mollybibbles August 14, 2010 at 12:54 PM

Kirby!!!!! What other bizarre, round, pink blob do you know of with such intense lung capacity, hmmmm? ‘Nuff said
