Anime Bites – Ichiban Ushiro no Daimao – 01

Posted on Jul 19 2010

After being told I just have to watch this series by our very own Llian, I hopped on crunchyroll and proceeded to watch, I’m going to share with you my experiences on a bite-sized basis.

Demon King Daimao – Episode 01 – Your Future Occupation Is: Demon Lord

Now, on to the actual review part of the review!

Animation
Watching the first few minutes of the episode the animation feels a bit lackluster, but you soon find out that it’s simply because they’re trying too hard, after that it seems to mellow out and the quality (for episode 1) jumps into what you’d expect of a modern anime. While there are some pretty nice looking effects, I would have to say I wasn’t blown away by the animation quality, it was just average.

Soundtrack
like the soundtrack, the music is good, I’m listening to it as I write this review, but, much like the animation, it doesn’t stand out, but I don’t want to get too ahead of myself, I’ve got 11 episodes left to talk about it. That being said, I like the bonus soundtrack that comes with the DVD, but I’d still rather use my FFXIII one, if that tells you anything about it.

Story
The story is set up fairly well in the first episode, there’s not much beating around the bush and it’s very promising. For a harem/fanservice anime to have a good story is what makes either genre watchable. There’s nothing wrong with a little fanservice, but if that’s what your show’s about, and not the story, you’ll end up with something simply lackluster that 13 year olds watch for “teh bewbs”. That being said, let’s look forward to what the story has to offer, as it’s got a lot of potential.

Characters
Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, while our story may show promise, our characters don’t at least not from what we’ve seen so far. As of this point in the anime we have already stereotyped 3 of our main characters, and they don’t look like they’re going anywhere different. That being said, let’s not judge the book by its cover, as we’ve still got about half our cast left to be formally introduced.

Wrapping up
All in all, if I had to make a recommendation based solely off of the first episode, I’d go with a yes. It’s not groundbreaking in any way, but it shows promise, and aside from character stereotypes, there isn’t really anything that takes away from the experience.
