My relationship with Durarara!! is what you might call rocky, a rollercoaster of emotions. If we were still sticking to the sandwich metaphor, I'd probably say that I wanted to send it back, but then I had a good bite and decided to keep it, but then I had another bad bite and I wanted to send it back again, but ultimately I decided to keep on truckin'.

Remember last time when I commented that the preview for Episode 19 - which featured Izaya smiling and everyone else looking miserable - boded ill for our heroes? Well that's +10 points for me, thanks for playing!

I think the mark of a well-developed character is that you sympathize with and root for him/her, even if you don't always agree with him/her or even totally like him/her.

Sometimes I let my sarcastic nature and general cynicism about anime completely take over the HoungBlog - it's been pointed out to me, more than once, don't worry. But I'm about to say something that I need you to read as completely free of sarcasm and 100% serious: freakin' awesome episode! Oh, Durarara!!, you cheeky scamp...you do know how to keep a blogger on her tippy toes.

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is: No festive gift baskets are being sent by me to the writers of the show. Better luck next time, guys! But the good news is: even though this episode had some big ups and downs, its downs were not the worst of the season and its ups illicited some genuine emotional reactions (different from the usual reactions of annoyance and eye-rolling). So...nice work on that!

Remember last week when the episode left off on semi-major cliffhanger? Remember grabbing your monitor with both hands as the ending credits played and yelling, "WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!" (You can admit it, I don't judge.) Well, apparently Durarara!! is all about the slow reveal and it takes nearly a full episode to get to the resolution of that cliffhanger, which made me a little bit crazy.

Well, it looks like Durarara!! is back to its normal self (that is, a show that has an interesting premise but makes decisions that I think are dumb) so I guess I should return to normal, too (that is, a blogger who's critical and not totally convinced that this show is any good). You knew all the positivity wasn't going to last, right?
