In a G4 interview with Reggie Fils-Aime, the interviewers asked about a comment from E3 when he said something along the lines of “This is not a portable device” and he confirmed that although it can play games without the screen, it is /not/ a portable device. It was hinted that the controller allows you to play the game on it via the WiiU’s wireless capabilities, meaning you’ve only got the ability to play it within the WiiU’s signal radius.
