Weekly Award – Week 21:

The Final Countdown Award – Countdown to Chaos

This week I am excited to share with you a very special event happening over the next month. The next two articles by yours truly will not be your traditional round table, but a countdown event the likes of which we have never seen. Over the next two issues, I will be presenting my top 50 anime characters, detailing their back story, memorable moments and showing just how they managed to make it on the list.

In preparation for this momentous occasion, I ask for your help Fanatics! Whilst I have my list almost completed, you still have some time to sway my votes by pleading the case for your favorite character.

If your suggestion has swayed my vote, you will be credited for the character’s inclusion on the list and also may be in the running for a very special prize!

The comment section awaits.

Now for the Round Table rules: As usual, each participant is given a series of questions covering various aspects in anime, manga and Japanese culture. Each individual then has to provide their opinion on the said issue. Finally, I begin construction on the largest list known to mankind.

    Our Participants today are:

  • Kate –
  • Zehutsumei – !
  • Ace – ,
  • Jessi – .
  • Shidohari – ?

What is your favorite piece of video game music and what series is it from? Is it a single song or an entire soundtrack?

  • Kate – It’s impossible to just choose one. I’ve loved the music from many games like the Tales of series, Metal Gear, .hack//, The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, Mario, etc etc. Each game in some way had a piece of music that I loved either calming, sad, dramatic, beautiful, whatever. I’m just one of those fans who will never choose which series had the best. In the end, every series has at least a song that’ll always be remembered.
  • Zehutsumei – My favourite video game music is from The Terminator for the Sega CD. It has an amazing soundtrack and is the true definition of how the ’80s worked.
  • Ace – I really like the boss music from Dissidia Final Fantasy. There are three of them and I always use them when I play. I like most of the FF sound tracks they all have good songs in the like One Winged Angel.
  • Jessi – The soundtrack of the pokemon from the GameBoys from gen 1 <3
  • Shidohari – My favorite music is Real Emotion from Final Fantasy X2. This song is probably got on the soundtrack for FFx2 or if it isn’t probably a single from the artist.

What is your opinion of the oncoming “Anime / Manga” ban?

  • Kate – What did they ever do to you!? Okay, censorship is good, but this is taking it way too far. If a parent doesn’t want their kid watching/reading that, you have the power to stop them.. till their older and can make decisions on their own. But yeah. All I got to say is this: WHAT THE *duct tapes mouth* ….
  • Zehutsumei – The bill won’t go through. Japan’s economic stability relies on Anime and Manga. If they start restricting it, the media will become stagnant, many studios will shut down, and their economy will be ruined. Also, who would believe the main contributor who happens to be a racist, xenophobe, hypocrite, and overall terrible human being?
  • Ace – Like most people I don’t like it. It’s bad news for anime fans but I have hope for it. I don’t think Its going to effect a lot of anime just the really gory ones or ones with really bad influences. I think the fans will fight to stop it if it gets out of control to. Well that’s what I’m hoping anyway. Plus there is already a lot of anime out there now that still hasn’t been brought over. So we will be able to hold out for a little while until they get everything sorted out.
  • Jessi – I’m actually a little upset about it although am not entirely sure on what will happen to the anime / manga in England…
  • Shidohari – I think as far as the Hentai bans go that makes sense…some under age kids are getting a hold of stuff they shouldn’t see because vendors aren’t correctly checking ages in some cases. As for the rest of the genres I think they shouldn’t restrict things as much as they are trying to.

Going into 2011 what is your favorite anime, do you think it will change by the end of the year?

  • Kate – I’m still a big fan of the Fullmetal Alchemist series and that won’t change. It could change in 2011 if I find something as good as that. I mean, I know series that have matched it (in my opinion), but yeah. Let’s just say I’m also with the Tales of series on this one
  • Zehutsumei – To be honest, I don’t watch much modern anime. While people are watching Majutsu no Index and Highschool of the Dead, I’m watching Witchblade and others from 2004.
  • Ace – Well I don’t really have anything that I consider my favorite right now. My favorite anime is usually the anime I’m watching. I’m kind of between anime right now I just finished watching Soul Eater and Black Blood Brothers so I guess those are my favorites. If a new anime comes up that I start watching then that will probably become my favorite so it could change who knows?
  • Jessi – Am not sure, Flying Cars hopefully ^.^
  • Shidohari – I don’t have a favorite anime at this time. I’m not into the new stuff as much of the older stuff.

Are there any new anime you are looking forward to the coming year?

  • Kate – Current ones I’m waiting for are .hack//Quantum (the final .hack//anime, probably, but we got the Link movie coming too), Mirai Nikki (was a great manga series. It just ended in December), Kore wa Zombie desu ka?, Dragon Crisis, and Cardfight! Vanguard (just gonna watch it hoping for those motorcycles and people playing card games on them). I know I’ll probably find more to watch. Until then, here’s my current list.
  • Zehutsumei – I am excited for To Love-Ru’s second season. If it didn’t already come out that is.
  • Ace – I don’t really know what anime are coming out next year so I don’t plan to see anything as of yet. I’m still waiting on the Trigun movie to be dubbed and come out but other than that I haven’t heard of anything good coming out.
  • Jessi – Not really I like to watch the older ones like Inuyasha and Ouran High School Host Club.
  • Shidohari – No anime but I would like the copy of the Live action Space Battleship Yamato Movie that just came out in Japan…it’s EPIC…

Which anime character do you think would make the best US president? Do you think they would be elected?

  • Kate – Not an anime character, but… CABOOSE FOR PRESIDENT! And, yes. People would vote for him. I mean, who wouldn’t??
  • Zehutsumei – Probably Kanta from Desert Punk. Sadly, he wouldn’t be elected though.
  • Ace – I think Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist would make a great president. He wanted to be the fuehrer and that’s kind of what the president is so he is ready for the job. I do think he would be elected because all the guys would love to see the girls in tiny miniskirts.
  • Jessi – I have absolutely no idea…
  • Shidohari – Professor Xavier from Xmen…and this counts because they also showed the 90s Xmen series in Japan.

Which current or old TV show would you like to see be made into an anime?

  • Kate – I really don’t know, but you can’t count out any cartoons. I mean, look what happened to the PowerPuff Girls. BOOM! Anime.
  • Zehutsumei – I would love to see Silverhawks done as an anime. Considering that Japan has done stuff like Cyborg 009 and Macross, it would be awesome to see Silverhawks. As long as they kept the lyrics to their theme song of course…
  • Ace – I watch Burn Notice and that would probably make for a really good anime. There aren’t a lot of anime about spies and that kind of stuff so it would be different and new. You could just change a few things and it would work out great. Plus they would be able to add in a lot of cool stuff that they couldn’t because its live action.
  • Jessi – The Worst Witch would be most wonderful <3
  • Shidohari – Babylon 5. I love that Sci-Fi series.

Round Table is always good but your special Top 50 Characters – that should be a great read. Sooooo many to pick from. Since you asked and I can’t stop myself, I’ll suggest a couple of my favs that may not be on your list:

Makina Hoshimura – (see avatar) a cute 16/17 year old high school student, who is murdered along with her family. Due to such an unfortunate death and unfulfilled life she comes back as a Shikabane Hime or Corpse Princess. Armed with a pair of Ingram MAC-11 machine guns she needs to complete a contract and blast 108 nasty back-from-death characters to gain access to heaven.

Age – 16yr old boy who’s actually 120’ish. A carefree good hearted wild-child who doesn’t say all that much but when he does its often with 120yrs of wisdom. He’s the carrier of the essence of Bellcross, via a stone that’s embedded in his eye. Bellcross, is one of the 5 remaining members of the Heroic tribe, and on demand Age transforms into him with power enough to destroy planets and stars. If you’ve got a big, bad space-battleship and its in his way, you’re the one with the problem. Tasked with 12 Labors, he helps lead the human race from complete annihilation. Age/Bellcross character and storyline is loosely based on Greek mythology Heracles/Hercules.

ok its up now Thanks 🙂

  • Shidohari January 30, 2011 at 6:33 AM

for the top 50 characters i’d like to submit Optimus prime because he’s that memorable and the transformers did come to us from japan…

Yami yugi/Yugi Moto. these characters have been influential in our lives for many years and in the yu gi oh case the spin off involve new characters.

as a afterthought i would like to submit ash ketchem although there really isn’t a plot to the pokemon anime anymore. Ash and Company provided the US the first taste of the Pokemon Line. since then even if you don’t watch the anime, you still play the games in most cases.

    those are my three picks.

    Enjoy.

    Shidohari signing off.
