EagleEyes’ Round Table – Yiff You Know What I Mean

Posted on Jun 23 2010

Furries loving Furries, catchy musical numbers and the anime industry heading into a downward spiral of nothingness? Sounds to me like EagleEyes’ new edition of the Weekly Round Table. So drop by, click on and boot up as we find out what you the 91.8 Fanatics have to say.

Weekly award – Week 8:

Yiff You Know What I Mean Award – Furry Love

Furries, Furries everywhere but not a drop to drink. If you have ever talked to me in the IRC chat or on the forums, you should know my opinion of Furries. I just don’t get them. I understand it is a form of expression but why would you find it necessary to dress like a dog / wolf / two camels in a tiny car. It confuses me. And what is the deal if a furry takes off their head, does it make them a centaur?
My feelings are probably best described in this quote from my friend Sonya, in relation to her boyfriends ‘Furdom’.

“They Keep trying to convert me. But I like being a woman, actually.”

I suppose in the end, people will always do what they want to do and that’s all we can really expect. So I put forward this message, acknowledge each other, appreciate their existence, and ummmm don’t burn the furries….?

Now for the Round Table rules: As usual, each participant is given a series questions covering various aspects in anime, manga, and Japanese culture. Each individual then has to provide their opinion on the said issue. Finally, spin the answers right round, like a record baby, right round and a round table is born .

    Our Participants today are:

  • MollyBibbles – Rants Alot!
  • AshFanGirlLisa – Is A Kid From Pallet Town!
  • Amui – EVERY FIGHT!
  • Dbull – Rocking With Meg?
  • BoneDiddly – o.o

Have you attended any Anime Conventions recently? Are there any you are wanting to attend in the future?

  • MollyBibbles – I went to Anime Central in Rosemont about a month ago with Sandy. Definite highlight was shaking hands and talking to Wendy Powell and Todd Haberkorn after the press panel. They are really chill people. Oh, and wandering around Rosemont trying to find a restaurant that didn’t have the words “Steak ‘n Shake” in the name for dinner.
If my local anime con people are teaming up with NVGA gaming chapter again, I hope to help out at Supercon here in Denver. Last year’s was a blast considering there were only about 30 of us anime people chilling out for 3 days.

  • AshFanGirlLisa – Last year, in February, I attended New York Comic Con. This year, in October, I hope to attend New York Anime Festival (it’s combined with NYCC).

  • Amui – I have not attended any, but in the near future we’re planning to move to an area closer to Nashicon at which point I plan to attend regularly.

  • Dbull – I’ve never attended an anime convention before to be honest. I’d like to go to one someday though, not sure which one though. Probably one that’s close to home.

  • Bonediddly – I live on a rock in the Atlantic Ocean… what’s a convention?

What are your opinions on the supposed downturn in the anime industry? How do you think the industry will be different due to these events?

  • MollyBibbles – Creating anime costs money. Dubbing anime costs money. Selling anime costs money. Buying anime costs money. The world over, regional denominations are losing value, making things more expensive to produce, but I don’t think this will affect the quality, but perhaps quantity. You might have to wait a while to see a dub of your favorites, but we can be patient….. GAH JUST DUB SEASON 4 OF YU-GI-OH GX ALREADY!!!!!! *Molly SMASH!!!*

  • AshFanGirlLisa – I hate what’s happening to the anime industry right now. I think it’s wrong for so many anime fans to be downloading titles illegally. If people are big fans of the anime they like, why not buy the DVDs? Would it kill people to spend a little bit of cash to buy DVDs of their favorite anime series? Generally speaking, I think what anime fans don’t realize is that, it takes a lot of work to dub an anime series. And when fans don’t buy the DVDs, it hurts everyone who worked so hard to produce the same series that these fans are watching illegally. It hurts the producers, the directors, and the voice actors, it hurts everyone who works on anime dubs. This is the main reason why piracy is wrong! It needs to be stopped now, before it’s too late!

As for how the industry will be different, if people keep downloading anime series illegally and this piracy continues, soon all the anime dubbing companies will go out of business. Not only that, but American voice actors will be out of jobs, as well. I certainly do not wanna see this happen, as I’m a huge fan of anime dubs. I only watch dubbed anime, and I for one, would hate to see it disappear from us.

We can only hope that this trend will soon stop and fans will start buying the DVDs. Come on people, let’s keep the anime dubs alive for everyone, current fans and future generations!!!!

  • Amui – Anime so far has stood the test of time, I believe there will be minimum at most changes within the Industry and in the end it’ll grow even larger than before, but we need better anti piracy laws to facilitate the growth as well.
And besides that with our great leader Lady Taigashimi ANIME SHALL NEVER DIE!! THIS IS ESPADA!

  • Dbull – Well, most of what I’ve heard about the downturn has been from Kana, and from what I’ve heard I would agree that there’s certainly a big problem facing the industry as we know it. It’s a shame that the industry is being strangled by some of the very people that “love” it so much (I use love in quotations because if they really loved it they’d buy anime instead of pirating it).

As far as how the American anime industry may change, I could see fewer and fewer series getting licensed in the future. For the Japanese anime industry, while this may be a long shot prediction I could possibly see more anime coming out that targets a more mature audience, i.e. the audience that is more likely to have disposable income with which to purchase anime.

  • Bonediddly – *mounts flame shield* Cheaper prices? Please?

Do you see yourself watching anime in the future. Is it something you think you may grow out of?

  • MollyBibbles – I wish to be buried with my giant Pikachu plush and my Yu-Gi-Oh! cards.

  • AshFanGirlLisa – I’ll always watch anime, even in the future. I can’t see any reason why I would stop watching it. 🙂

  • Amui – Of course, yet no one can foresee the future with any certainty, Do I plan to continue watching and reading Anime/Manga? of course i do, do things always go as planned? usually not.
Will I grow out of it? Only time will tell, but at the moment it’s a love of mine that I do not plan to give up.

  • Dbull – Well, as far as I know I’m going to still be watching anime for a long time. I’m turning 23 on the 20th (hence the 620 in my username) and I’m not showing any signs of growing out of it yet. Heck, I’m buying more anime in the past year than I ever have.

  • Bonediddly – It’s possible(being a young’un and all), but fiction is always a passion with me. Anime is just a great example of interesting fiction.

  • What are your favorite songs in the 91.8 music library? What songs would you like added to the data base?

  • MollyBibbles – The Littlekuriboh stuff makes my day. Who doesn’t want those leather pants?!?!
Dude, I’m not a DJ so I know very little when it comes to the music side of the operations. Who knows what those DJ’s do when the content providers aren’t around.

  • AshFanGirlLisa – Currently, I don’t have any favorite songs in the music library. What I’d like you to add would be, any English song from an anime series. 🙂 Especially Pokemon music!! But if that’s not possible, you could always add background music (BGM songs) from the Pokemon anime and movies. 😀

  • Amui – Every Fight is easily the best song on 91.8 The Fan, the vocals are so smooth and soothing and its just a pleasure to listen to, I’d love to hear Hanamaru Sensation on the DB as well as Dango Daikazoku from the Clannad OST.

  • Dbull – I’d say my current top 5 are (in no particular order):
Euphoric Field (English Version) – Elisa
    Howling – Abingdon Boys School
Colors of the Heart – UVERworld
    Sailing Free – Olivia
    The Messenger – Nobuo Uematsu

And now the whole world gasps at the absence of Egao No Riyuu from that list.

Top 5 songs I’d like to see added:
    Clover – Meg Rock
    Disillusion – Sachi Tainaka
Kirameku Namida Wa Hoshi Ni – Sachi Tainaka
    Imitation – Sachi Tainaka
    Synchronicity – Yui Makino

  • Bonediddly – Protomen<3 … Could we get some time travel on the go here? I mean, we clearly need more Protomen, but there isn't any to be found… yet.

Anime of the day: Full Metal Alchemist. What are your thoughts, feelings and experiences with the series? Have you seen it or are you avoiding it like the plague.

  • MollyBibbles – I first watched it at a ballet summer intensive a few years back. She had the box set and I got kind of hooked. I had read a bit of the manga prior to that but hearing Roy’s voice was…..well, let the enthusiastic fangirling speak for itself.
I own 1-6 of the manga and when I actually remember to set my DVR I’ll watch Brotherhood. Other than that, I’ve pretty much moved on from the series in general. If I ever get my nerdy buttocks in gear maybe I’ll finish reading it so I can read the last chapter… Or I’ll just skip ahead to the end. Those are both likely paths to be taken.

  • AshFanGirlLisa – Full Metal Alchemist: No, I haven’t seen it. After watching the first episode, I knew it wasn’t the kind of anime I would enjoy. It’s WAY too depressing for me. I like anime series with a more happy atmosphere, anime series that are funny and cheerful. 🙂 I also don’t like series that have too much blood. I’m not sure if FMA has a lot of blood or not, since I’ve only seen the first episode, but it’s certainly a depressing series. And that’s why I don’t like it.

  • Amui –
I read the Manga, it’s an off and on thing with me that I’ll pick up every now and then but not an obsession like One Piece is, I do however intend to start watching Brotherhood at the next available moment, i just have so many Anime I’m planning to pick up and watch that its not at the top of my list.
The best thing they did with the Anime was to pick up Vic Mignogna for Ed, that was a match made in heaven and it felt like it was just meant to be.

  • Dbull – I saw the original series and the movie and loved every minute of it. I started watching Brotherhood but I had just finished the original series less than a month before Brotherhood started coming out so I ended up putting it on hold, although I intend to get back to it very soon.

  • Bonediddly – Saw it a short while back. Great series. Felt kinda long and was a bit slow at the start… Oh, and Al is too vanilla. Consider that my official nitpicking.

I’m saddened that I didn’t think of this earlier. If you guys are to add anything to the database of awesomeness get Marigold by Orange Pekeo (The OP to Ristorante Paradiso) That song is full of happy.
