Weekly award – Week 11:
Filler Filter Award – 5 Episodes Without a Filler Arc
What is this? Can it be? Believe it or not, my loyal fans, the anime series Bleach has just managed to go an entire 13 episodes without the need to loop into an arc of filler. I personally am very proud of the bleach producers and think it is a good step in the right direction.
This topic is covered a little later but for a series as large and popular as Bleach wouldn’t it be more beneficial to, instead of filler, possibly develop your characters personalities and back stories? Just some food for though.

Now for the Round Table rules: As usual, each participant is given a series questions covering various aspects in anime, manga, and Japanese culture. Each individual then has to provide their opinion on the said issue. Finally, I make everyone sign Non Disclosure Acts so that they will not give away my secrets.
- Our Participants today are:
- Chris – Digivolves
- JinnRemona – Appears
- Jubilee – Captures cards
- PissedSilentBob – Talks?
- Zero Gravity – Does a barrel roll!
With the recent turn of the events in the series it looks like they may finally be heading towards a conclusion. How long do you see the series continuing, an do you see an arc after the eventual Aizen battle?
- Chris – After? No. During? Aboslutely. What’s going to happen, is the fatal blow to Aizen will be seconds from being delivered. And literally inches from contact, the scene cuts out into some ridiculous scene involving Keigo, and that lesbian chick who’s in love with Orihime.
- JinnRemona – It’s hard to make a intelligent guess on when Bleach may eventually end, as it has it’s ways of forcing the story to continue moving forward. Personally, I can see the series continuing for at least a few more years, as the anime is likely to throw in another filler somewhere down the road. This statement may not be true, if the manga ends rather soon.
- Jubilee – I would have to say at least another 50 chapters, if not a few more. I am just predicting the final battle with Aizen will be drawn out, just like most of the other major battles. I really hope they give Bleach a good ending, and do just that, end it. I don’t see any reason for the series to continue at this point other than extra money, which would just make me sad. It has an opportunity for everything to come together at the end well, I think…Or at least I hope.
- PissedSilentBob – PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB doesn’t foresee another arc after Aizen. They have built the series up and up and up to reach this point, everyone pushing Ichigo to the next level to be ready for this fight. Bob does think that there will probably be more movies for the series though.
- Zero Gravity – I kinda wanna see at least one more arc after the current Manga one, to look a little into the “Spirit King”, I mean, if he’s protected by really strong people they must be tougher then the Gotei 13.
What is your opinion on the amount of filler in Bleach? Do you feel it effects the quality of the show and would you prefer the series to take a hiatus as opposed to another filler arc?
- Chris – If the filler wasn’t so poorly written, I wouldn’t care. But because it’s so obviously filler, it bugs me. I thought the whole “swords coming alive” plot was really shallow and boring. I find Bleach filler to be agonizing. Except the bounts. I enjoyed the bounts arc. But I only enjoyed that arc because Izuru got a pretty decent battle scene, and there was a good amount of focus around Uyru, who I believe is one of the more interesting characters. Filler or not.
- JinnRemona – The amount of Filler in Bleach isn’t a very bad thing when it comes down to it. When our favourite animes usually come to an end, we’re always wishing there was more, that it wouldn’t end. Fillers prolong that. Though, fillers like the Bounto Arc make it hard to fully appreciate Fillers. Though it would be nice if Bleach only focused on the main story at all times, I would rather a filler over a hiatus, as I would prefer the time between main story to be filled with something, then nothing.
- Jubilee – I do not like the fillers, other than the occasional Karakura Super Heroes. One every now and then I can deal with, but if another atrocity like the Bount arc ever surfaced in another anime, I would drop it immediately. The Bount arc was just so…far off from the story, and poorly thought out…it was painful to watch honestly, which is a shame, as I really like some of the character development in Bleach, and felt the filler really damaged the series for alot of people.
- PissedSilentBob – PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB doesn’t care much about the filler in the anime, Bob never watched that whole bount arc. Bob would rather the series take a hiatus compared to just throw an arc in that doesnt make sense just to fill the time slot.
- Zero Gravity – Too much, the Zanpaktou arc was cool, but after defeating Muramasa having like, 15-20 episodes afterward of them just messing around, that was annoying
Which character’s back story would you like to see explored. Or is there a minor character who you feel could use more screen time?
- Chris – Too many characters, too little time. What about Sajin Komamura? WHY IS HE A FOX? I’ve always wondered how in the world he is just a giant fox thing. Where do giant fox things come from? How was he able to become a captain even though he’s a giant fox? A minor character that needs more? Definitely Chojiro Sasakibe. He’s the lieutenant to Yamamoto. He wields a rapier type sword and that’s literally all that’s known about him. I’m curious to see where he came from and how he got there. He’s the lieutenant of the first division, he must be pretty talented and acclaimed.
- JinnRemona – Personally, I would like to see some serious backstory put into Yamamoto Genryuusai, the First Division Captain. He is a very powerful figure in Bleach, and one to be respected for his overall power. A filler arc explaining his rise to power would be an interesting idea, as things couldn’t have been so easy that he just announced he was the leader, and everyone accepted it.
- Jubilee – Well, I’d personally like to see more of Mayuri. He is a really sick character, and I mean that in both senses of the word. I’d like to see more of him pre-pendulum arc, to see exactly why he was in jail, yadda yadda, how he got his Bankai, etc. Also, as a minor character, I’d like to see Ururu develop a little more as a character, but that’s mostly just because I think she is awesome.
- PissedSilentBob – PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB would like to have the back story of Mr. Hat and Clogs (Urahara)….o wait they did his backstory already.
Bob would like to see the story about Kon and how he came to be in the soul candy and what he did to deserve that fate. - Zero Gravity – Souske Aizen
Who is your favorite character from the series and why? Would you like to see a series of episodes exploring this characters back story?
- Chris – Izuru Kira! He’s just an awesome character. Very calm, collected, he’s a leader, and his sword is confusingly squared at the end, but amazing nonetheless. I love watching his battles as they are based more on strategy than brute strength. Another of my favorites would be Shuhei Hisagi. He’s such an emotastic character with an awesome and equally as emo shikai. And the third place goes to Ikkaku Madarame. My answer explained in the last question.
- JinnRemona – My favourite character is Zaraki Kenpachi He’s my favourite not for his sheer power in battle, but for his attitude towards nearly everything. He enjoys fun over work, power over skill, many things that would likely get a person killed in another anime. The main part of his backstory has already been explained. Diving deeper into his past may be an interesting idea, but finding something of interest in his past to make an entire filler out of, is probably unlikely.
- Jubilee – Oh, that is such a difficult question. I’d have to say either Byakuya, Soi Fon, Yoruichi, or Szayel Aporro Grantz. It’s so hard to pick only one…so I’ll just go with Szayel as the fact I doubt he will be mentioned elsewhere on the Table. He is just awesome in his released form, pure and simple. Plus, how many episodes did it take to kill him? Exactly, he was an excellent villain.
- PissedSilentBob –
PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB thinks his favorite is Urahara because he just pops in and pwns your face, plus he wears a hat and clogs, he’s just that amazing. Bob thinks for the backstory, see previous answer. - Zero Gravity – Either Souske Aizen or Kisuke Urahaha, Urahara was always just awesome, strong yet comical, Aizen is just a bad ??? to the bone
What is your favorite song from the series, and why? (Opening, ending or other)
- Chris – Alones – Aqua Timez. First of all, Kon. There is nothing more hilarious than seeing Kon singing this opening theme song. It makes me laugh every time. It’s just an all around good song with great sound. A very close second goes to Tonight, Tonight, Tonight by the Beat Crusaders who are one of my favorite asian bands who just recently broke up.
- JinnRemona – My favourite song out of the large list of songs used in Bleach would have to be the sixteenth ending song, Gallop by Pe’zemoku. It has a style of inspiration of moving forward no matter what, that always seems to make me smile when listening. It also says alot about Ichigo and Rukia, that he is always there to help guide her when she’s lost.
- Jubilee – Another toughie. I’m going to say Velonica by Aqua Timez, the 9th opening. I always thought that was a catchy song, and often find myself humming it. Bleach, even though many dislike the way the story has been going, still has great music, and I have yet to find anyone who disagrees on that note.
- PissedSilentBob – PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB would have to say his favorite Bleach song is Houki Boshi (Abandoned Star) – Younha. Bob doesn’t need a reason why he likes this song, you got a problem with that, we can take this outside.
- Zero Gravity – Bleach Opening 2 is by far my favorite, followed by “Number One”
What is your favorite weapon from the series, and who is it held by? Why does this weapon stand out?
- Chris – Ikkaku Madarame’s Hozukimaru. It’s simply because Ikkaku’s bankai is just one of the most exciting things I watched in Bleach. Things really are more exciting when you have to wait for them.. and it was every bit as goofy looking and bad ??? as I was hoping. So for having an awesome bankai, Hozukimaru wins my vote.
- JinnRemona – My favourite weapon is the simplistic blade held by Zaraki Kenpachi. Unlike the other weapons held by the Shinigami in Bleach, this weapon in no way increases the strength or abilities of the user, but is instead amplified by the sheer power of it’s user. This isn’t very original, but in the world of Bleach, a blade that has no abilities, but can still stand up against other captains, is one that stands out.
- Jubilee – Senbonzakura, Byakuya’s Zanpakuto, hands down. It scatters into flying cherry blossom petals. There is no weapon in the world more win. It’s pretty…and deadly…and pink.
- PissedSilentBob – PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB would have to say his favorite weapon is Byakuya Kuchiki’s Senbonzakura. Bob thinks the name just rolls off the tongue, just like his bankai Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, besides, who wouldn’t want a thousand cherry blossoms to stab you in the face.
- Zero Gravity – Don’t particularly have a favorite, I suppose Benehime since it can cover offenses and defences
