You probably didn’t even know until now that the urge you’ve been having to follow your mailman was the fine instinct of a stalker! So, “that’s that weird feeling I’ve been having lately,” yes it is! It’s the over-powering desire to join the 91.8 The Fan team!
Though, you may be asking, “What do I have to do to become a 91.8 The Fan team member? Would breathing out of my mouth in a tired, creepy manner help? Perhaps looking up the skirts of small plastic figures? Owning the most expensive and powered computer on the market with only ramen to eat because of it?”
Actually, yes! All of these help in defining you as a total fanatic, which means you’re passionate and well versed in the anime world (though it should be noted we accept normal people as well). What will help more is if you’re experienced in the following fields:

A Disc Jockey (more fondly referred to as DJ) is an engaging position in a fast-paced and quick thinking environment. Often times a DJ will select music that has some sort of correlation to each other and play it live on air. They also have to produce and make their own show with the incorporation of anime, manga, or Asian news, weather, or related stories to the subject matter (or topic of the day). Very rarely do DJs ever read straight from a script, though, if it is required, the DJs themselves are responsible for writing and producing said script, along with delivering it in a believable fashion to the audience.
Responsibilities:
- Filling a two or four hour time slot every weekday or weekend with entertaining content on the fly.
- Receiving listener calls and requests in a prompt manner.
- Announcing musical artists and their respective song titles.
- Managing allotted time for playing both music and commercials.
- Able to hold a professional conversation with notable icons in the anime, manga, or music industry.
Requirements:
- A working microphone that produces a high quality of sound.
- A cable or DSL internet connection (dial-up is not acceptable).
- A good understanding of music in general whether anime, video games, Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean, or Chinese geared.
- Passion for the industry in general.
- Able to work with a team!
Things That Would Rock:
- An understanding of your own voice, the way it sounds, and any quirks you have that will attribute to your radio personality.
- A confidence to allow you to speak with strangers, interviewees, and to all of your listeners.
- Experience in sound mixing, sound effects, or song creation.
- Ability to multi-task and keep track of every piece of sound used on-air. -
Most artists are multi-media based and can created images by traditional mediums or computer software. Occasionally, artists also are aware of the complexities involved in animation, but this is not required.
Responsibilities:
- Mimicking an anime-like style to create promotional art for use in high definition videos, merchandise design, or flyers.
- Sketching, inking, and coloring (traditional or digital) art specifically made for the site.
Requirements:
- The basic understanding of human anatomy.
- A vague knowledge on the anime art style.
- Ability to sketch, ink, and finalize a piece by coloring it.
Things That Would Rock:
- Knowledge in animation such as Flash.
- Knowledge in 3D models.
- Can work in several different medias, such as traditional, digital, etcetera. -
Database Administrators are in charge of the creation and keep-up of our own databases. This position is specifically involved with our anime directory, a large storage of information involving legal places to watch anime online.
Responsibilities:
- Able to judge whether or not a users submission to the directory is acceptable to our standards.
- Able to check the directory several times in a day to properly maintain it.
- Correct and track any incorrect information in the directory.
- Track sites of interest to update the directory with any new information.
Requirements:
- Excellent grammar and writing skills.
- A knowledge on anime, the companies involved with licensing such anime, and various streaming sites across the net.
- Keeping all private records in the directory secure and safe from our visitors. -
This job deals with all forms of advertisement, social networking, and various other events. A great deal of involvement is necessary to properly keep track of all the special situations going on with the site, forums, directory, and radio station. The basic duty is making sure that each of the previously listed areas receives a wider audience.
Responsibilities:
- Promoting the station‘s image, programs, and activities through contests, events, and activities.
- Analyzing our listener database by demographic to better advertise our target market.
- Writing business proposals.
- Maintaining our MySpace, FaceBook, and Twitter.
Requirements:
- Excellent grammar and proper writing skills.
- Ability to update multiple social networking sites in a day to make our audience aware of current events on the site (IE the basic functions of MySpace, FaceBook, and Twitter).
- Knowledge on the anime market and who it appeals to.
Things That Would Rock:
- Experience in advertisement.
- Ability to bring new marketing approaches to the team.
- Knowledge of simple HTML and CSS to stylize pages such as MySpace, or Twitter. -
In the case of 91.8 The Fan, our News Director, will be working side by side with our DJs and iStalk editors. Being aware of what’s popular and what’s happening now in the anime world is absolutely essential for this position. Communication as a skill needs to be grounded to properly illustrate what news should be applied where.
Responsibilities:
- Collecting interesting happenings in the industry for use on iStalks and on-air talk shows.
- Assigning certain news stories to certain people that best suits their radio persona.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of various different media that project news on anime, manga, Asian culture, and music.
- Ability to properly produce well-written scripts on the fly.
- A strong sense of communication.
- Easily able to analyze different personalities and address their various needs.
- Able to work with a team
Things That Would Rock:
- The ability to read or translate Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or Taiwanese.
- Previous experience in writing, reporting, or news in general. -
Web Producers on 91.8 The Fan fall into two categories, with the difference being either written material or visual in presentation. Generally, most Web Producers will take care of the planning involved in their own production, thus allowing a good majority of their creativity and personality to shine through to visitors of the site. They are a staple of our company, and as such have very important jobs.
Responsibilities:
- Writing, producing, filming, or otherwise creating a feature in a written or visual format.
- Ability to change their material to fit the quality standards of our site.
- Ability to stick to a deadline of a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly schedule.
Requirements:
- Can note ones own mistakes and are willing to act to change such mistakes for a higher quality.
- Is able to take constructive criticism.
- Able to write reasonably well and in a timely manner.
- Able to edit their own footage or vocals without assistance.
- Easy to relate to or otherwise charismatic to viewers.
- Good time management skills.
- Able to work with a team
