Watamote - Episode 001 Discussion
Watamote was one of the few anime of the Summer 2013 I was looking forward to.
I've seen some pathetic characters in anime, but poor Tomoko makes me want to hug her every time she fumbles for words. I think we've all faced some sort of scrutiny or had jokes poked against us. But with Tomoko, it's even worse...it's like she's not even there! Unlike Hachiman from SNAFU, she doesn't embrace this loneliness and wants to change things in high school, which we see isn't working so far in episode 1. She has her flare ups of "screw this, humanity sucks" moments, but overall I get the sense she really wants to fit in. The comedy of this is that she has no luck whatsoever. Every single thing she tries, from acting different, to changing her look is a disaster. Even her brother (who looks just as rundown as she does) wants nothing to do with her. The OP theme is so random, but it strangely works for the series. I'm already on Episode 4, so I'll leave it at this for this episode. I like it so far, it's worth a look for something different than the typical comedies out there.
