Favorite AMVs

I'm a big fan of AMVs. I'm not able to make my own, but I do enjoy watching them. ^_^ Hopefully everyone would like to share their favorites with me.

This AMV "Valhalla" features Macross Frontier and was a finalist in the AX '09 AMV contest. For anyone who hasn't seen the series yet, this video may contain spoilers.

Re: Favorite AMVs

Fun fact: Most AMVs suck hard ♫♫♫, so this a list of favorites only by the virtue of them not being awful.

I seem to be doing something wrong with the bbcode. could i get an example code of how you hide the video in the spoiler tags like that? I haven't posted in any forums much recently, so i don't know. thanks.

Re: Favorite AMVs

There are a few hidden gems out there, but they are all old AMVs:

Yes, they are all Azu AMVs, however, they are all amazing.

Of course, I gather this doesn't include the Japanese MADs.

Just quote someone's working code and you'll see how.

I don't see why it wouldn't. AMVs are just a subset of MADs, so as long as it's noise (AMV's grown to be pretty broad) over anime I'd imagine it's fine. I mean I already posted two.

Anywho a little "blast form the past", as it were, for me with the 1985 AMV. The video is weak a points but the song caries it.

I'm a big fan of AMV Hell. Very funny stuff there, and I can't wait for the next one.

However, this thread is about your favourite AMVs. The western version of the MAD.

No they aren't. MAD is a blanket term for basically any A/V fanwork, AMVs among them, though I believe they're called anime MADs in Japants, but six of one half a dozen of another.

Re: Favorite AMVs

MADs are remixes however (audio), AMVs are purely just stock footage on top of stock music, maybe with a few filters ran through the footage.

I was wondering what the difference was, that makes sense.

This video is what got me into appreciating AMVs ^_^

Ah yes, that AMV used to be all the rage.

That certainly is a kind of MAD, but if you'll take a gander at the second video, in the post where I was on topic you'll that 11s make AMVs too. It also includes original animation and/or music, such as though the music on that is only mostly original. MADs also have ♫♫♫♫ that's basically, and actually I'd imagine, sideshows, like that has UBW spoilers in it, by the by.

Skittles is okay, the video is way too busy though, but J-Rap is a hilarious concept to me.

I suppose this would be another example? though it's also labeled as AMV...

Is MAD even an acronym for anything?

Re: Favorite AMVs

The second MAD there was based upon a Visual Novel, of course it'd be like a slide show.

The images look to be original drawings, however.

The first video uses both, what I imagine to be 3D animation that only has a single colour and set to it (contrasting to the background) and original music.

Yes it is. It's probably labeled as such because people think they're interchangeable, and seeing how liberal the definition of AMV is getting in a couple more years and they might be.

I don't believe so, word on the street is it's based off the name of some of the first MADs, but I can't say for sure.

So, that doesn't not make it a slide show, it was just the first thing I could pull up. All the images are from the VN.

Yeah, but what's your point? Also the song isn't wholly original, it was inspired by an apparently really popular Touhou song.

I've played the VA, they look more like fan art.

It's not stock footage, and that counts as a partial remix. You still haven't shown me an AMV that's like a MAD and vice versa.

Re: Favorite AMVs

I thought I would step in here a throw out a few videos that pertain to videos of the Anime/J-Pop persuasion. The reason why Im not calling these AMVs or MADs is because I just don't want to get into this nice little informative debate. They are terms that have recieved very broad meanings but I could really care less what a video actually is. It's like why do they call Comic-con...Comic-con though it is becoming less and less a comic book convention and more of a pop media culture convention. People are just fans of the term and they dont want to call it anything else or make new names.

But the etymology of words and terms is still fascinating in certain instances (thanks to Hot For Words) :stars:

Anyway, enough chatter from me, this is a few I like:

Ah yes, as of late I have seen the rise in those 'character replacement' videos (Parody videos) rising:

And I'm surprised I have brought up Hyadain yet.

Nor trends that typically seem to span across AMVs, MADs and Youtube Poop Music Videos:

Just to clarify are we talking about the Higurashi one or the F/SN one?

Well I can't and I have. An AMV can't "be like a MAD" because they are MADs, so unless you can accept this we aren't gonna get anywhere. Technically I can't do that either, for basically the above reason, but I did reference the first two videos in my first post, but I suppose I wasn't explicit enough, so I'll repost.

There are distinct differences between MADs and AMVs. How would I know? Because I was a long time member at AMV.org.

AMVs are what I have already explained, stock footage on top of stock audio. The infamous AMV Hell is a shining example of this, with hundreds of submissions from hundreds of people being simply stock footage on top of stock audio.

MADs are usually a step above this, usually incorporating custom made graphics and modified music.

Also, let's not forget AMVs are western creations, while MADs are eastern creations.

A microwave oven and an oven. Their purpose? The same: To cook food using some sort of source of heat. Do they do it the same way? No, they do it in two completely different ways, essentially making them two completely different things with the same purpose.

Re: Favorite AMVs

Oni your problem is that you're misattributing one, maybe two, types of MADs as all of them.

As to the East-West thing, if looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and tastes like a duck, it's a duck.

If this doesn't make my point to you I don't give a ♫♫♫♫ anymore.

Fun Fact: I picked 29 videos because this is the 29th response in this thread.

By the by most of these suck, I'm just trying to make point.

Re: Favorite AMVs

Just throwing out videos without attaching them to anything isn't proving anyone's point.

To be noted: You have gone from saying that AMVs are a sub-section of MADs,

Quote:

I don't see why it wouldn't. AMVs are just a subset of MADs, so as long as it's noise (AMV's grown to be pretty broad) over anime I'd imagine it's fine. I mean I already posted two.
to saying that they ARE MADs,

Quote:

Well I can't and I have. An AMV can't "be like a MAD" because they are MADs, so unless you can accept this we aren't gonna get anywhere.
And this is why I can't take you seriously. Your argument hasn't been able to stay on course the entire time. To me MADs and AMVs are two totally different ways of executing the music video, one done with stock footage on top of stock audio, the other being done in a much more complicated way.

So, no. I can't see your point, because your point keeps changing.
