Hey guys, it’s me again, with another review. This week I decided to change it up with a manga… about creating mangas! Have you guessed what we’re about to take a dive into? I won’t be giving any hints, so grab a friend as we jump into Mr. Ohba and Obata’s creative world of Bakuman!

Bakuman is an extremely unique slice-of-life-romantic-comedy-drama manga, starring two junior high-school boys, our main characters: Moritaka Mashiro and Akito Takagi. One day, after Mashiro leaves his notebook at school, he heads back to retrieve it only to be confronted by his classmate, and most prominent member of his school, Takagi, who is known and admired for his extreme intellect. Though there’s a twist, he doesn’t want to confront Mashiro about just anything…but rather about the doodles and drawings, found in the back of his book, representing another classmate known as Azuki Miho, Mashiro’s crush! Takagi suggests that Miho must like him too (as he sits in the back of the classroom, he proudly proclaims that he can see and notices many things); and agrees not to tell Miho anything about what happened…but there’s a catch! Takagi proposes a strange thing.

“Mashiro, make a manga together with me!” Although the proposition is beneficial to Mashiro’s skill, he declines. His decision heavily influenced by an incident involving his uncle, a formerly serialized mangaka who died from overwork trying to regain the fame he once had. Later on, Mashiro recieves a call from Takagi, telling him that he’s about to tell Azuki about their discussion, and that he should tag along… WHAT?! Wait… How’d he get Mashiro’s number anyway…?! And so, shortly after arriving Takagi tells Azuki that he’s been well informed by her friend that she has the dream of becoming a voice actress. Not a bad dream I’ll tell you that! I know once in a while we all get in our corner pretend to rehearsh lines! What’s surprising here is that she actually admits it; Takagi moves into phase two of his plan…

He informs Azuki that he’s going to become a mangaka…and then forces Mashiro to do the same. In the blink of an eye Azuki lights up like a Christmas tree and express her enthusiasm towards the young boys, which rekindles Mashiro’s dream. Not just to become another statistic within the world of business, and obtaining an office job. But chooses right then, and there, to become a mangka instead! Mashiro promises Azuki the lead role in their first anime, to which she eagerly agrees. Something suddenly sparks in Mashiro… Was it the look on her face? Or the sheer yearning to be with the girl he loved for so long that pushed him over the edge…? Because in the midst of the hype and confusion…

When our dreams come true…will you marry me!?

Certainly, this wasn’t a part of Takagi’s plan… Mashiro shouts the one sentence that would change his, and his classmates lives forever…

Bakuman for me is a really great read, I mean, it has it all. The creators, the story, the drama, the jokes, everything’s there for you to enjoy at your disposal. When you first start off with the characters, you’re immediately caught up in their vigor to be the best there is. Their determination knows no bounds and their ability to get up after falling is truly remarkable and encouraging. The reason I picked up Bakuman is because, as an artist, myself, a lot of things that were narrated by Mashiro just…clicked. Mind you it can be understood by readers who are not into art, but the way he speaks and the choice of words just, hits you because he himself is an artist.

The story relies heavily on character interactions and drama, and allows the creativity of each author to shine throughout the course of the story. Take Mashiro and Azuki’s relationship for instance; even though they were so in love with each other there were still obstacles that caused their faith to falter, and that, in turn, gives the reader a more real-life setting. Not only that, they solve things like a real couple, and think like real couples do with all the worrying and anixiety that comes along with a relationship. Choosing instead to put us in a seat that is comfortable, and not so foreign. Something where we can totally understand, or even relate to enough to say… “Hey, I’ve been in that situation before.” or something close to it.

One of the main reasons I started reading Bakuman was not only because of its innovative storyline, but because of who was behind it. Long writer Tsugumi Ohba and his artist Takeshi Obata once again paired up to bring us something other worldly, in a familiar world… I love this pair to death, and to be honest they’re two of my favorites. Especially its artist Takeshi Obata, who’s dramatic drawing brings to life the already vivid world Tsugumi had set before him. I think the only qualms I would have about the storytelling was the it’s long-winded sometimes. So if you aren’t into manga with lots, and I mean LOTS of words, brace yourself if you’re interested in picking this manga up.

The main thing I read Bakuman for are the tips and knowledge it presents to its readers about the world of mangakas, and just how hard it can be to set yourself in it. I noticed that a lot of the techniques Mashiro uses to draw, I also use, and it makes me feel more inclined to read further into the story. I want to find out just how much more they can pass on to me, or what else can I pick up on. Words like ‘name’ is apparently a term used to describe a rough draft for a chapter, and should be drawn out for a editor to look over before each meeting. Things like these, I feel a bit more knowledge, and more experienced. It also has aspects for young writers, showing them avenues they too can use. Just looking at your life may inspire you to write something that may one day storm the literature industry by surprise…!

Bakumen also specializes in character development. It puts the right amount of focus onto each aspect of the current story, and also on it’s side characters. I love the fact that every character can be somewhat redeemed, and I find it hard to hate on any of them. They’re all working hard towards their goal, and they’re going all within their means as an artist, as a writer, as friends to encourage each other to be the best they can be. I also love the fact that the main characters always have a goal, trying to surpass someone, and most importantly…trying to surpass themselves.

Although Bakuman hasn’t been out for very long, they have some loyal fans, and enough to even warrant an anime that’s supposed to be airing this upcoming Fall! So if you can, start reading. It’s been serialized in english so support them! Encourage your friends everywhere to support the industry you love, the industry that even now is continuing to inspire artist, designs, and writers alike. Alas, we’ve come towards the end. But fear not! I’ll be back again next month with another, hopefully, spectacular review. This has been Meringued Mangas and I hope to see you again next time~.

Don’t forget to stop by the forums in my section to recommend a manga you know that’s not as popular as it should be, can be, or ought to be! Here, on 918thefan’s forum.

Hey, it’s time for a Meringued Mangas Review, once again! But this week, we’re going to mix it up and present to you a little something special involving the favorite mangaka’s from 918 The Fan’s forum members!

So, some of you may or may not know that the original intent for Meringued Manga was to introduce readers to new series that were extremely good but not widely talked about. Well, this week we’re going to try a different approach! I headed over to different forums, including 918 The Fan’s, asking and researching their thoughts on their favorite mangaka’s. Some of the replies were kind of surprising, but nevertheless intriguing. Here’s what they came up with:

“Hiromu Arakawa all the way for me. Any mangaka able to come up with a series as fantastic as Fullmetal Alchemist and make it look so great is well worth being a favorite.”

I would say Natsuki Takaya. Not just for her works with Fruits Basket, but also her new work, Twinkle Stars, which I own! In French!

Hiro Mashima, I just think his style is real good. Somehow it reminds me of One Piece…..

I’m going to be extremely generic, and say Tite Kubo. Bleach was the FIRST Manga I ever read, and I owe the fact that I’m even here to the amazing first arcs in Bleach.

YuYu Hakusho – I love the artwork despite how poorly it may seem, fights are great too.

Hiro Mashima because he’s funny and his art style is a little over-exaggerated. Reminds me of One Piece. I loved Rave Master

Taste really does vary from person to person. But the one thing every mangaka mentioned had in common was their ability to produce mangas with quality! I mean, it’s no doubt that in some aspects, their drawings must be on par with a quota; but the thing that really drives people to read from these inspiring artists is their determination to satisfy their customers and readers with their captivating stories.

I think that’s what we as readers feel when we read a chapter every week, or every month. Take Natsuki Takaya for instance, at first glance, a reader like me, who’s so widely into Action, Seinen (mature male), and Supernatural would stay away from her works. But after reading Fruits Basket, I can appreciate the work that she spent developing her story and characters, even though it’s of a Shojou genre. She approached the climax of a love triangle in a away not many people would, because it’s very hard to pull off a satisfactory ending with that concept.

One of the ways you can tell a good mangaka from afar is by their ability to produce unique stories, and by their ability avoid cliché plot devices. Now this is not an easy task, as almost every manga will have at least one cliché plot device. Mangaka’s like Naoki Urasawa (20th century boys), Hiroya Oku (Gantz), and Mohiro Kitoh (Bokurano), are good examples of magnakas who make a great deal of effort to keep their stories unique. I’d like to note that ” ” avoid this as well, which is impressive because it’s hard to give your character life-like emotions without your mind straying towards the stereotype.

Urasawa Naoki author of Monster, Pluto, and 20thCB

We may think that it’s easy to avoid; that listing the things that are common in stories we can detour our minds away from them. But did you realize it’s not to easy to create a new story from scratch, without the assist of clichés? This is where we can see the obvious line that separates mangakas with talent from the latter. Another excellent example of this is Hiromu Arakawa.

From what we’ve learned already, we can safely say that asking someone their favorite mangka is the equivalent of asking someone what’s their favorite manga. They both go hand and hand; which brings me to another point. I find that a lot of individuals had Kubo Tite (Bleach), Eiichiro Oda (One Piece), or Kishimoto Masashi (Naruto) in their lists. This is not that all surprising considering their popularity in Japan. What is interesting was that there were very FEW people that liked them as a mangaka. Let me explain what I mean by that.

Earlier I said that; “The thing that really drives people to read from these inspiring artists are their determination to satisfy their customers and readers with their captivating stories”, so ask yourself; How many people do you know that read the big three and think highly of them as mangka’s, or just manga’s that are okay and pass the time? I mean, I doubt that they respect them any less; they’re in the top 3, of course, and obviously required some level of respect for their work.

Simply put, it’s hard to feel the drive that you feel from other artists work. And it may be because of their popularity. The more widely a manga is known, the less people appreciate it’s work (Mangas like Fullmetal Alchemist being an exception).

Hiromu Arakawa's self-depiction the famous author or Full Metal Alchemist

Kubo Tite is loved more-so for his illustrations rather than his story and is also ridiculed about having major plot-holes because of horrible pacing. I like this mangka, he’s not my favorite, but it’s a pity because if you look closely enough, Bleach’s story (I feel) is ingeniously put together; but maybe I’m just being biased.

Naruto is loved for its backgrounds…and for Sasuke. As a mangaka I feel Kishimoto focuses too much on that one aspect of the story! There are other characters that we’d love to see, and while Sasuke and the others are very important to the group, it could prove fatal to a manga’s success if you fail to provide development for your side characters. Now if we go to One Piece, I think this might be the closest we have to reaching the quota I mentioned before. Hardly anyone complains about it, and if it is, it’s usually commented on the randomness One piece brings to its readers. Like our surveyors mentioned very early in the review, he has a similar character style, and story telling to Hiro Mashima who is also famous for his outrageous plots.
But it could just be Oda’s fanbase over-hyping.

So when I say that the determination of a mangaka can be felt, those are the aspects I analyze to reach that conclusion. Though, it’s 50/50 when it comes to the big three, as they only have a week to prepare something for us to read. So most mistakes are excused, not like D. Gray Man and Claymore, who have months for their chapters and sometimes produce average storytelling. Remember, sometimes when looking for a manga to read, it could be a better to approach the situation by:

Finding out the author of mangas you’ve read.

If they published anything new/old.

If there are other mangakas that have similar tendencies and writing styles to mangakas you already love.

While this method might not be 100% satisfactory, it should help you choose a manga that you’ll love overall. I hope you’ve learned something from this; I sure have! Every time I write a review I learn something new about a manga I’ve read, and a different way to look at it. So I hope that I’ve brought something new to your table as well. Thanks for sticking with me again this week! Enjoy the rest of your features here at 918 The Fan, I’ll be seeing you again, soon.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s not Batman, it’s me, Llian! I take it you’re here for another dose of Meringued Manga’s monthly review, so let’s not waste any time and get right into it shall we?

This week I had originally planned to look into a comedy manga, but I figured that I’ll stick with the shonen genre for one more week. We’ll be taking a look into the story of Katsura Hoshino’s D.Gray Man! Recently D.Gray Man has been changed from a weekly manga to a monthly one. That’s okay, because the story seems to be even better than it once was, and the artwork has also picked up tremendously.

D.Gray man recites the story about a world filled with Akuma’s (demons) that were created by the Millennium Earl; and a young boy named Allen Walker, just one of an organization of many Exorcists who use ancient substances, called Innocence, to battle against the Earl and his army of Akuma. Katsura’s manga was serialized in 2004 in Weekly Shonen Jump. Today, they have released nineteen (19) volumes; and was recently transferred from releasing weekly, to monthly, in November of 2009. There has even been an anime adaptation of 103 episodes that aired from October 3rd, 2006, to September 30th, 2008. The anime has been licensed by Viz Media, and the manga by Funimation Entertianment in the United States.

The story starts off with a monologue; referring to the chosen people known as Exorcists who hunt down those covered in Darkness, otherwise known as Akuma. Two police of a small town are investigating the disappearances inside an abandoned church. Several travelers with no refugee take shelter there, and when they wake up in the morning everything except their clothes vanished. They townspeople blame it on a curse, because of an incident that took place there two years earlier, but Officer Moore knows that it’s nothing more than a strange rumor heading around town! …Yeah right.

As she and her partner survey the church, they come across a cat. As officer Moore takes the cat a swarm of bats fly through the hallway and a strange, disfigured hand grabs officer Moore and slams her into a chair. To the readers surprise, it is none other than an adorable little boy, Allen Walker, who proclaims that the cat (whom I’ve nicknamed Stoler) has eaten a valuable assets of his, given to him by his master. Officer Moore questions Allen further on the matter… Let’s just say it doesn’t go well for Allen and he ends up getting handcuffed to a chair~ They hear a scream by Officer Moore’s partner, but it’s too late. He’s pinned to a wall with star markings all over him! And shortly later, he breaks into dust…ew. Well now we know why the travelers have been disappearing and leaving their clothes behind, but what’s causing this? The dust that starts to settle makes Officer Moore sickly, and Allen saves her as she passes out.

When she awakens, we find that she’s in a police station and her superiors think that Allen was the one that killed her partner Officer Charles. Allen..killing Officer Charles? I know some cute kids do some vicious things in mangas, but this is preposterous!! Allen explains that he knows who the culprit is, and he’s willing to help them find him, after Officer Moore returns home to her immobilized brother… I think I have a good idea who this culprit is as well. Allen begins explaining to Moore that an Akuma is a weapon created for evil, by evil that targets humans. Now, normally something that abnormall you’d be able to spot right? Wrong. Akuma’s have the tendency to take on human shapes so it’s quite difficult to tell if a person is an Akuma or not, without proof of seeing their true form. This is where the fun starts! Allen’s left eye has the ability to see whether a person has an Akuma in them or not!

As it turns out, Officer Moore’s brother was indeed the culprit. Through a quick but educational battle, Allen frees her brother’s soul, and heads off towards one of the main headquarters for Exorcists, The Order. Also, Stoler the cat did not survive through this catastrophe! A moment of silence for Stoler…

Now for my thoughts on this manga. It’s still ongoing, so there is nothing definite to what I’m feeling, but it was definitely a good and amazingly interesting read. I mean, the battles are amazing, and for the most part, every explanation can be understood with ease. Until the more recent releases… but we’ll tackle that bridge when we get to it. I think the characters are really unique, even for Allen in all his Michael Sueness. Yes, I said Michael Sue. And honestly, this manga has one of the best character developments I’ve seen in a long time. I’m not talking about “oh yeah I just got an awesome power up” I’m talking about a character growing through his trails and learning something from it. I’m talking about a bit of personality change and a growth in maturity. When it comes to the character, you will definitely not be disappointed. Even the antagonists are lovable! You hate who you need to, and you love who you’re supposed to.

Story-wise, this manga is pretty up there. The story is really unique and it gets the job done by ensnaring it’s readers. The only thing I’d comment on is the lack of substance in the main arcs. There are times when the arc is really boring because it’s been drawn out a bit too long. I think it’s just a matter of preference, though, so if you enjoy long arcs then there shouldn’t be a problem. Her artwork has improved drastically over the cross of this manga, and I have to say there was never a time I hated it. I loved all three phases she went through. They were probably due to her hand injuries (she her hurt hand twice, I think). So taking time off from drawing led to some different styles when she came back, and for a while she was also on hiatus. I think that’s the reason D.Gray man’s popularity decreased over the years, but it’s still holding on strong, and I commend it for that.

Once again we’ve reached the end. It’s sad for me, I hope you liked this review, I worked very hard on it~ Thanks for sitting through, next month I’ll probably be doing something a little bit different, just for you guys! So make sure you check it out!

RIP Stoler!
Hey guys, welcome back to Meringued Manga! This month I’m going to talk about Vampire Knight, a very popular manga written by Matsuri Hino. It has an anime adaptation of the same name. The series was serialized in January 2005 by Lala magazine, and is still on-going. There are currently eleven volumes out in Japan, and the series is licensed in English by Viz Media with currently eight volumes out.

Volume 1 cover

The story starts with Yuki Cross, as she recalls her earliest memory. On a snowy winter night she meets a pure-blood vampire named Kaname Kuran, who saved her from the attack of another vampire… Yuki is a prefect of Cross Academy and is the adopted daughter of the school’s headmaster, Kaien Cross. Kaien is a pacifist at heart and truly wishes for vampires and humans to coexist, and for that purpose, built on that philosphy, Cross Academy was created.

Alongside her is her childhood companion, Zero Kiryu whose parents were killed by a pure-blood vampire. Because of this, he refuses to trust them, and is fixated on eliminating them all, one by one. The ironic part about it is that Zero, himself, is now manifesting vampiric (lol new word) traits, having been turned into a vamipre after being bitten by the pureblood Shizuka Hio that killed his parents.

Yuki, being the adooorable main that she, is tries to help Zero with his bloodlust, while trying to regain the memories she lost before Kaname found her in the snowy field. By allowing Zero to feed off her blood, it prevents him from becoming a level E vampire and prevents him from losing himself and giving in to his monstrous instincts.

Now while this manga may be popular, I find the main plot of the story a bit overused, as most shojo’s tend to take the same route in all their plots. Girl meets boy, girl likes boy, boy possibly likes girl, and, yeah… you catch my drift right? I mean, yes, we get vampires are sexy and enticing, but can we please get back to the story. The beginning of the story, I’d say wasn’t ‘hard’ to get through, but it proved a problem to me, as I like my main girls to at least have a bit of a backbone, and when they do, please show it! I guess it’s to be expected from Shojo manga; but aside from the lack of action, this manga holds it’s own extremely well.

For a manga with an almost cliché storyline that includes common fictional creatures, it’s doing fairly well, and I have to amend it on it’s ability to keep us drawn and coming back for more each month. I find that its strong point doesn’t come from the action, it’s mostly about luring the reading into the storyline (however tedious it may be) whilst continuing to have that element of surprise.

The characters are a bit predictable in a sense, and even though the cast is huge, it seems like the better characters get less screen-time the more the story goes on. They kind of get thrown in the backseat. (Though, this may seem biased of me, as my favorite character is Akatsuki Kain, who is more or less a supporting character anyway.) You have your adorable, innocent main, and your two hot guys, one that’s obviously tsundere for the main, and the other, who she wants to be with, but just can’t. But even so, the range of personalities of the characters is very diverse, and you can almost feel that, under the circumstances, their actions can truly be considered ‘humanly’, acceptable, and plausible.

I think you should also be aware that there is an anime out with two seasons and they are both finished; so if you liked the manga, you might want to check out the anime as well. It’s interesting and very amazing how insanely popular this manga is, especially for a shojo (which are detested so much for their similar plot). Vampire Knight also has a Drama CD, Light Novels, a Fanbook, and a Video Game! Which in my book, is pretty impressive.

Now usually I’d get put off by this, as I am a girl who loves her action+suspense, but I don’t mind a little lovey manga every once in a while. Although Vampire Knight is not as great as it CAN be, it is still immensely enjoyable, and until the time comes for its conclusion, I will continue reading it. I’m looking forward to the day when Zero and Kaname have an actual fight because, come on, it’s gonna happen! So yeah, I’m actually looking forward to more of Vampire Knight because it can be a really great read, if you’re really into this sort of thing, and if not, then it should at least pass the time for you.

Well, we’ve reached the end. I know, you’re said. I would be too~. Make sure to keep a look up for my next review, where we’ll take a look into a comedy. I’m not quite sure which one as of yet, but I’m always open to suggestions! Until then, later guys.

Well it’s that time of the month again! Time to read one of Llian’s Manga Reviews and Recommendations. This week she takes a look at the popular Fruits Basket series. Read more to see what she thought.
Hello once again and welcome back for another round of Meriguined Manga’s Review! Before we begin, I’d like to apologize for last weeks article, I was lackadaisical and because of that last week’s review ended up half finished, and for that I’m sorry. No doubt, it won’t happen again…you have my word! Now…this week’s review is on a shojo manga! I decided to take a different turn as I’ve only been reviewing mangas of a shonen or seinen genre; so let’s get started. This manga has been recorded as the 2nd most popular shojo manga in Japan and in North America it is the queen on shojo ranking in 1st! Sit tight as we explore the world of Fruit Baskets a manga that I’ve recently come to love and adore!

Fruits Baskets is a popular shojo manga series created by Natsuki Takaya. It was first serialized in the semi monthly japanese magazine Hana to Yume (well known for Skip Beat), and published by Hakusensha from 1999 to 2006.

The story revolves around a highschooler named Tohru Honda a hardworking and energetic young girl who recently lost her mother, Kyoko Honda, in a car accident. After Tohru’s mother dies she was sent to live with her grandfather but he decides to renovate the house so that a few of his relatives can roam with him leaving Tohru homeless. Tohru then decides to live outside in a tent and obtains a job to maintain herself. Although things looked bleak, Tohru continued on with a optimistic mindset! This girl is pretty strong, even by manga standards…

One day while setting out from school, Tohru discovers a Japanese style mansion nearby her pitched tent. While looking at a set of zodiac ornaments that were place outside the house she meets Shigure Sohma. The two engage in a conversation about the twelve zodiacs and Tohru living close by (hence her appearance by their house). Twelve animals were invited to a banquet by god and all the animals were able to attend, save for the cat, who was deceived by the mouse and his love for tricks. This happens to be Tohru’s favorite childhood story, as her deceased mother often told the tale. Tohru’s favorite zodiac sign is the cat despite her sign being that of the dog! The conversation ends abruptly and Yuki Sohma is introduced who happens to be a popular classmate of Tohru and Shigure’s cousin.

After a series of events Shigure and Yuki take a walk in their backyard, and spot Tohru walking off in the distance. It’s strange, she mentioned that she lived close by, but… all the land surrounding the house belong to the Sohma family. Let’s investigate! And thus, the two find Tohru, with her pitched tent… Shigure bursts into laughter, and so did I~. After taking Tohru back to their house, they make a deal. Tohru can stay there as a permanent guest if she cooks and clean and she agrees. Afterward Shigure detects a landslide and Tohru’s things are buried underneath, she has a fever so the two suggest that she rest for tonight, and she does. In the morning, her things are found to be retrieved by Yuki! (How sweet). While showing Tohru her new room, an orange haired boy kicks through the ceiling and tries to pick a fight with Yuki. His name is Kyo Sohma. And as Tohru runs to stop the two, she ends up tripping and hugging the Kyo from behind. And the result….he has been turned into a cat and the real story of Fruits Basket begin to unfold!

From here the story spins a tale about the Sohma family, who have been cursed with the fates of the twelve zodiacs. When a member of the Sohma family comes into contact (usually a hug) with the opposite sex, they turn into their respected animal representations. Each character is unique in their own way, and equally hilarious in every aspect.

Between Kyo and Yuki’s ongoing fight and the sweet moments between the three as friends, the manga is incredibly appealing to read; and shows the benefits of friendship, and learning to cop with one’s own personal problems rather than running away. The manga also hints at the reward of effort and hard-work towards anything in life, whether it be friendship, work, or school. It’s very down to earth and very enjoyable. Personally, my favorite character so far is Momoji, he’ll be showing up later in the manga if you decide to read it. Might I add, he’s just too adorable!

Although the art is not top notched, it is still decent and understandable in turn of grasping situations and whatnot. And I find that it’s cute art fits the story amazingly well. It just helps you to identify and understand the artists style in a way that makes you appreciate it just a little bit more.

In closing, the manga itself is very good and hints and some underlining factors that originally you’d never pick up on.I have yet to discover the; but I have a feeling that it’s going to make for great story telling. I’m usually not such a huge fan of shojo but I’ve really come to love this manga. Dare I say, from the first chapter! And I’m glad I decided to pick this up. This manga also has a 26 episode anime adaptation so if you like the manga watch the anime too!

Well, we’ve come to the end, but don’t cry! I’ll be back again next month to recommend another manga that’s hopefully to your liking! Thanks for reading and look out for my next review. If you have any mangas that you want me to check out and write a review on, leave a message in the comment box below.

Hello everyone and welcome back to another month of Meringued Manga’s Review. Today we’re taking a look into a Manga that’s well under wraps, and if you ask me, it’s about time we tear that wrapper off!

The manga Deadman Wonderland is a series written by Jinsei Kataoka and illustrated by Kazuma Kondou. Some of you may recognize the name of this individual, as he wrote and illustrated the Eureka Seven manga. It has been published in Shonen Ace since 2007 and, according to Wikipedia, this ongoing manga has a total of 4 volumes out. The name “Deadman Wonderland” has a eerie feeling that goes well with the manga’s story, characters and art.

The manga starts off with two children playing together, accompanied by a woman playing a familiar tone on the piano. Two pages after the now happy, and somewhat nostalgic, scene is replaced with a suggestive disturbed scene. Ten years have passed since the ‘Great Tokyo Earthquake’ that left over 70% of Tokyo under water. Deadman Wonderland is set in a prison of the same name; and a prison our main character Ganta Igarashi finds himself in.

Red man

Ganta Igarashi was leading a normal life until one day while conversing amongst his friends he notices individual floating outside his classroom window…on the 4th floor. This terrifying man kills everyone except Ganta, and shoots a red piece of glass into his chest. Despite being pierced by this ragged edged glass, no trace of this remains; resulting in Ganta being falsely accused for the murder of his whole classroom, and sentence on death-row in the prison Deadman Wonderland.

The prison itself is very unique and stands as an entertainment center for innocent civilians. Almost like a carnival, inmates put on shows to entertain the civilians. The prison was built centering around tourism in hopes that the Tokyo that was destroyed would be revived again. A rather unorthodox method…it’s almost as if they haven’t thought this idea through. You may think that they’re hardly concerned with the welfare of the civilians, and it may seem as if they take no precautions against the inmates, but…! The prisoners are kept in check… Along with the prison the rules that govern it also call for an unique aptitude.

The necklaces around an inmate acts as an ID for tracking, a stunner, and many other safety measures. Those on death row, however, are constantly administered poison through their collars: should an inmate not consume a special candy-like antidote provided to them at the cost of a large sum of Cast Points he/she would die almost immediately. Cast Points are earned by putting on attractions which are twisted games that usually end in bloodshed.

All in all I can say that this manga is very entertaining, if not slightly disturbing. I would suggest picking it up if you need something new and interesting to read, that isn’t just your every day shonen manga.

Hello everyone, it’s that time of the month again…for Meringued’s manga review! This week I’ll be writing about a manga escalating bit by bit in popularity: Alive – The Final Evolution.

Alive – The Final Evolution Review

Alive: The Final Evolution is published in Japan by Kodansha, and in english by Del Ray Maga. Right now, there are nineteen (19) volumes published in Japan, and eight (I think), in America.

Volume 3 Cover: Kanou & Yuta

The story follows a young teenager by the name of Taisuke Kanou. He leads a normal life of a japanese high schooler with his sister Yoko Kanou and friends: Megumi Ochiai, and Yuichi Hirose. When the manga first starts off, you’ll find yourself in a familiar setting, as it starts off just like any other sci-fi story. An unknown species visits the earth, and strange events start to occur shortly after. Well, all that happened and more. In Alive, this means an enormous amount of suicide cases around the world better known as ‘Nightmare Week’. Oh, I guess that didn’t peak your interest enough. What if I told you that each individual was insanely happy while doing so. Well, if that didn’t do the trick then I don’t know what will. I, for one, definitely wanted to know why these poor “everyday” people were able to commit suicide so happily; and on such a large scale.

Now the story for one is brilliant, it takes a very vast scifi concept and makes it into something that’s interesting and fun to read. After the events of Nightmare Week, individuals from all around the world start showing strange signs that they’ve gained powers. And those who have these powers refer to themselves as comrades. Incidentally, Taisuke and his friends are drawn into strange situations that lead into the main arc of the story. As the story is really interesting I want you to learn about it by reading the manga, because it’s really interesting, and I might mention a few spoilers if I go into detail so let’s just leave it at that. The story moves at a comfortable pace with it’s long winded chapters and, quite frankly, I’d like it if most manga’s were this way. It gives me time to soak up all the events that went on in that chapter. I think there’s a higher probability that more people will be able to remember what happened the chapter before because of it. Sometimes when I read short chapters in a manga I tend to forget what’s happened in it because it’s so short. (Or maybe it’s just because I’m so forgetful…) In Alive it’s kind of rare that I have to go back a chapter or so just to remember what happened. The chapters leave that kind of impression on you; you know the one I’m talking about. The feeling that leaves you speechless, and you’re so excited you don’t know why. Anyway, it just goes to show how versatile and flexible the story really is. Just like any great sci-fi story should be.

Alive – The Final Evolution is a wonderful manga; but even though the plot is enticing, our main characters follow characteristics of a somewhat cliche character lineup. We have Taisuke Kanou, a goofy, honest, and caring individual as our lead. Megumi Ochiai, the somewhat abusive girl that has a crush on the main character. Yuichi Hirose, who is always bullied and made fun of. Takizawa Yuta, who is at first an enemy of Taisuke but ends up joining him on his journey. And Kusnoki Nami, the tsundere (Tsundere’s are a must!). As you can see the personalities in the beginning are a bit cliche, but that just emphasizes of the phenomenal character development. They really do grow as individuals and this just makes the manga more life-like. What I mean by that is that their personalities are so distinct the characters seem real as if they were based off of real humans. The supporting characters are really great as well, so everyone has their fair share in the spotlight. So even if you end up liking some of the antagonists (I know I did.) you’ll get chances to see them as much as the main characters.

On to the art, which starts off plausible in the beginning. At the start of the manga, the artwork was a bit edgy and to be honest it kinda suited the feel of story, but I didn’t like it all that much. Even though the anatomy and perspective were right, it felt amateurish. As you can see by the illustration below. His work improved by far! Pretty cool huh? It’s fun to watch an artist get better at his work. I don’t think I have any qualms with his artwork. The transition between panels are easy to follow, along with the fight sequences. I know in most manga’s a fight sequence can confuse the hell of out ya (it’s happened to me too many times). But I think in this one they’re a little bit easier to follow, and I like that it’s characters and settings still have a uniqueness to them even while they fight. So, in short, I’m loving this new style of his and I hope he continues to get better.

Alive - The Final Evolution art comparison

I have to say, Alive is one of my favorite mangas out at the moment. I came about reading it while searching for another manga to read. I’m eagerly awaiting the next chapter as always, and I hope you guys will pick it up as well because it is a good manga. Right now, I’m not too sure where this manga is heading. The story to me is progressing, and I’m not sure what’s about to happen next. I don’t even have an idea about it, but that’s okay. Sometimes it’s good not for you when you’re not able to perceive what happens next in a story. And I hope that’s the case. The artwork, the story telling, and the characters all fit so well together it’d be hard not to love. It may not get as much attention as Bleach, Naruto, or One Piece but it’s exceptionally well, and I urge you all to read it with me. I know the art is a little iffy at first but don’t let that stop you! Please don’t…! I almost forgot to mention that this manga is getting it’s own anime so keep a eye open for that as well! Thanks for reading and I look forward to writing another review for you. If you have any mangas that you want me to check out leave a message in the comment box.

Change123

Change 123 is a well written manga that was published in Akita Shoten’s Champion Red since 2005. It is written by Iku Sakaguchi, and illustrated by Shiuri Iwasaw. The story follows Motoko Gettou a female

high-school student trained in martial arts by three different masters, all proclaiming to be her father. Because of the harsh training she undertook, she developed three split personalities referring to themselves as HiFuMi. Before we get into the meaning of HiFuMi, let’s just take a look at their relationship with Motoko. HiFuMi immediately comes to Motoko’s aid when she experiences danger, faints, or when either of the three wants to come forth. This goes for HiFuMi as well. When one is defeated in battle another takes over, but this only lasts as long as two personalities are conscious. Despite being alter egos of Motoko, she can not communicate with them directly, and vice versa. But they can communicate amongst themselves. Motoko has given them different hair styles to tell them apart. They can also differentiated by their subtle, yet distinguishin features.

The story first starts off with Kosukegawa Tereharu, a classmate of Motoko. After purchasing some small, cheap action figures he witnesses Motoko being harassed by some thug. He overlooks the situation after the thug threatens him and loathes himself for being too weak to help her. Nevertheless, he returns with renewed (though weak) determination only when recalls the words of the great Kamen Raider! (No doubt about it….this is a parody for Kamen Rider! >_>;) After remembering those words, he decides to return and help, only to find the that this thug has already been dealt with by Motoko herself. But as fate would have it she never wanted anyone to witness such a thing in the first place and the now hysterical Motoko pleads with Kosukegawa to keep it a secret and he agrees. Even though they met in a awkward way, Kosukegawa is fortunate to have met Motoko and after some thought asks her to go to the beach with him at a later date. Everything was going fine until Mr.Thug decides he’s going to interrupt and exact some revenge. Of course, he’s not allowed to follow through with it, and suffers to defeat by the hands of HiFuMi. Great justice was served by their hands. And trust me, it felt good.

Let’s take an in depth look at HiFuMi. HiFuMi is a combination of the first two letters of each of her alter ego’s names, Hibiki, Fujiko, and Mikiri. Hibiki’s personality is that of an aggressive tomboy, and her skills represent the color Red (attack) in the color attributes pertaining to martial arts users. She is also skilled in karate and trained to approach enemies head on. Though each ego is powerful in their own aspect Hibiki is usually relied upon for being the brawns of the group. Fujiko, on the other hand, is a calm individual who uses her brains and rationalism to analyze any situation, coming up with a plan that produces the best chance of success. She is also a sharp marksman, representing the attribute of Blue (speed) therefore, the quickest out of the group. Last is Mikiri with a child-like bubbly personality, having a large appetite she loves to eat, and enjoys sleeping as well. She is an expert in defense, represented by the color Yellow, and is skilled in Judo, as seen by her submission and grappling moves. They also come out during normal, everyday situations, so it’s not like they only surface when there’s a battle. So you really get to see their distinct personalities shine.

Originally I wasn’t really into this manga, and I didn’t look into it before hand. I just found it at random, and decided I’d continue reading. I think it was a good choice on my part because it is exceptional well written. The artwork is amazing, despite the ecchi aspect (which isn’t so bad every once in a while). The character designs are on par, but what really got me was the movements of the characters. Basically, I mean their techniques. The fights are never dull, and they never (or rarely) use the same move twice. Somehow I feel that something new is always being brought to the table. It makes you feel like you’ve seen something incredibly amazing (which half of the time is the case); and that’s saying something if you think about it. A lot of mangas/animes nowadays are pretty repetitive, it’s like they’re bound to use some attack that is guaranteed victory, and spam it…

I’ve found that this manga is quite popular and not because it has an ecchi factor, or because it’s of a shonen genre. I think what draws everyone to it in the first place is its sense of realism. Everything that’s done in this manga stays within the realm of possibilities, despite it’s far fetched ideas every now and then. You’ll fall in love with the characters, I find that they’re so lovable, it’s hard to hate someone you’re not meant to. In a sense, I guess Change 123 is one of those mangas that tug on your emotions so hard that when you’re caught up in the moment you feel yourself feeling the same angry, regret, sadness, and happiness as the character. That’s one of the things I admire, its story. If a story is so intriguing that I’m caught up in the moment when I’m supposed to be, crying, angry, or sad, I think that’s one of the best parts about it.

Well, the genres Change 123 belongs to are pretty diverse; but I think anyone who is willing to read it should follow suite and join the rest of us who are. You won’t be disappointed. Then again what’s not to like about kickass girl’s fighting, right? That’s always a pleasure. There are only forty four (44) chapters out at the moment. So if you’re seriously considering picking this up, now would be a good time, before you get discouraged by an overwhelming number of chapters; I know I do.
