EagleEyes’ Round Table – X-Men

Posted on Apr 27 2011

Blue fur? Check! Leather outfit? Check! Overwhelming sense to do good? Check! Sounds like we have everything we need for another EagleEyes Round Table. This week we discuss all things X-Men, as well as find out which modern day celebrities could use their own super hero show. The Governator anyone?

Weekly Award – Week 25:

The X-Factor Award – Everyday Superheroes?

What makes a hero? The flashy costumes? The awesome powers? Or is it the super human drive to do something more?

I have always been under the firm belief that one does in fact need “Super” Powers to be a “Super” Hero. Though many disagree due to that analogy shunning the beloved Batmen and Ironmen of the world. To my understanding prancing around fighting bad guys in shiny outfits doesn’t make you a Super Hero, it makes you a professional wrestler….

So I ask you, what does make a superhero? Leave your feedback in the comment section bellow.

———————————————————————————–

Now for the Round Table rules: As usual, each participant is given a series of questions covering various aspects in anime, manga and Japanese culture. Each individual then has to provide their opinion on the said issue. Be warned as answers may contain spoilers. Finally, BETH SMASH.

    Our Participants today are:

  • EagleEyes – EagleEyes
  • Jubilee – Jubilee

Who is your favorite X-Men character? (It’s ok to include more than one)

  • EagleEyes – Gambit, easily. As opposed to other “super heroes” he rarely takes the moral high ground, using his back ground as a thief to trick and deceive those around him. In fact this is his most appealing feature that allows him to surpass my other favorite, Nightcrawler. You get all the cool powers and awesome story without being preached at.
Though they rank as my favorites, I also have a soft spot for Rogue, Storm and Spiral.
  • Jubilee – Well, obviously, my favourite is…Storm. I mean if I could have any power I would defiantly take hers. flight and awesome offense? What’s not to love?! Jubilee is my other favourite of course. A list of other notable X-Men I really like include Angel, Gambit, Pixie, Shadowcat, and Emma Frost. I like some who aren’t X-Men as well though, a.k.a Toad. He is by far my favourite villain. I like Scarlet Witch and Mystique quite a bit as well though.

What has been your favorite story arch from the series? Is it widely know or just a personal favorite?

  • EagleEyes – Personally my favorite storyline is the Genosha arch from the animated series, which utilises the sentinels and Master Mold as the antagonists. Not only does the early arch focus around Jubilee, Storm AND Gambit, it also features cameos of some lesser known Marvel characters . As the story develops we are treated to one of the best fight scenes in the series, an all out brawl between the X-Men and the Sentinel army.
  • Jubilee – Age of Apocalypse. Although the timeline lacks Jubilee quite a bit, it is the one I would say I am most familiar with. In addition, I really liked Day of M…even if it is evil…They are rather impactful arcs/timelines/whatever you want to call them, so people might know of them.

What are your thoughts on the new anime series? Does the art style / plot meet your standards of the series?

  • EagleEyes – I am actually quite impressed thus far and for several reasons: I am actually quite impressed thus far and for several reasons:

    – No Phoenix

    – Everyone acknowledges Cyclops is a whiny little child.

    – Storm > Pirates

    – Not Wolverine heavy

The only thing that really bugs me about the show is the design of beast’s face.

  • Jubilee – So far I like it. I really enjoy the art style, especially Storm. She looks awesome. I’m not quite sure where the story is going yet, as the way Emma Frost acquired her secondary mutation was a bit different than usual, however, I do like how they are incorporating the Hisako character so far.

What is your favorite incarnation of the series? Be it comic, cartoon or movie.

  • EagleEyes – 90’s cartoon series, without a doubt. I really liked X-2 also.
  • Jubilee – 90’s Cartoon. Best there will ever be. Of course I like the comics as well, (although I do not own any…I would really love to try and read them all someday). I also like the X-Men: Evolution that was around not that long ago…and the new Anime series is good so far, as stated before. The movies were meh. The first two were good, but I wasn’t really a fan of the third. Plus, I hated how many mutants they left out or stuck into deleted scenes, *COUGH COUGH* JUBILEE *COUGH COUGH*.

With the future release of X-Men First Class, what are your ideas for a new x-men movie? Would it be a continuation or a brand new series?

  • EagleEyes – X-2 is one of my all time favorite movies and by far the best X-Men movie to date. Rather than just being the Adventures of Wolverine and friends, it told several different stories all of which culminated at the films end only to set up perfectly for the third movie…. *Fan boy moment over*

Ideally I would have a reboot of the series focussing around the cast of the 90’s animated series. Keeping Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman ect in their roles and recasting Jubilee, Gambit and possibly Rogue.
  • Jubilee – Well, I liked the concept of the Wolverine movie, showing off his background and such. Even though the movie itself was utter crap, I have hope for First Class, as it will be following both Charles and Erik. Plus, I am excited to finally see Emma Frost and Banshee in the movies…along with Pixie, who I was surprised to see in the trailers.

Which pop culture figure today do you think deserves their own Marvel super hero adaptation and why?

  • EagleEyes – Sarah Palin…
  • Jubilee – BETH SMASH!

Also, Lady Gaga. She can have heat beam vision or something.

Being a super hero also requires a cape. Beth has a cape…

    I like the banner 😮

Jubi, Beth already HAS a Marvel Superhero adaptation… She-Hulk
I do agree with Age of Apocalypse being amazing, Rogue x Magneto is just such an odd pairing though, lol. But I always like it when Magneto is more Hero-y, because the entire basis of his character is pretty awesome, though often misguided.

My fav characters would be Wolvie(and I’m allowed to like him and not be one of those people, because I’m Canadian) Magneto for the aforementioned reasons, Shadowcat, and in Marvel in general Spider Man. He may not be a mutant, but he’s always been the best.

As for the Hero vs Superhero discussion, even though they are both dirty capitalists, I’d say Ironman counts as a superhero, since he is of superhuman intellect, and his suit obviously puts him on an equal level with other superheroes. Batman however survives thanks to plot armor and the fact DC villains aren’t as awesome.

As for cartoons the 90s cartoon is obviously the best, though I am watching Evolution on Youtube right now (Marvel has it on their official channel) it’s soooo bad. But it’s so bad it’s good. They are all drama llama teenagers in highschool. Senator Kelly is Principal Kelly, and in the first season Mystique was the principal… Though I’ve always been a book > movie kind of guy, so even though the 90s cartoon was amazing, I prefer the comics.

Moviewise, I THINK I agree with EE… I forget which movie is which, though First Class looks to be blowing them all away. Though Halle Berry was a terrible Storm… I just wish they’d stop letting Hollywood idiots ruin my fav. IPs and characters with terrible writing, directing, storytelling and casting. I mean Pete in the middle of Spiderman 3? He’s supposed to turn into a jerk, not a joke. and the hairstyle change to mark the difference?

I also like the banner, Psylocke is awesome, I wish they would bring her back to MvC3

    • Jubilee April 28, 2011 at 6:42 AM

      Beth is 100x > She-Hulk.

I dont even know why She-Hulk gets so much recognition these days XD

      • AnarchoElk April 28, 2011 at 8:50 AM

Because she is a respected lawyer? That or because she is in MvC3

        • Jubilee April 28, 2011 at 11:52 AM

          Oh I guess she is in MvC3 isn’t she…
Yeah, I still don’t get it. XD
          Who really likes her? 😛

I think Lady GaGa would have Fabu-vision (Sending out rays of fabulousity to turn bad people into other things) and the ability to control her minions, like Aquaman.

Also, I think George Takei would make a good superhero…

    • AnarchoElk April 28, 2011 at 8:49 AM

Lady GaGa – Aquaman with Fabu-vision.
      I like.
