EagleEyes’ Round Table – The Rockwiz

Posted on Sep 22 2010

Welcome to EagleEyes’ Round Table where we don’t just report the news, we steal introductions from iStalk. This week we talk music, movies, games and reveal not only a guest host for the next issue but a brand new surprise for a months time.

Weekly Award – Week 17:

RocKwiz Award – Testing the Fanatics

Ohu. I thought this week I would stray from the path of sanity and test you, the 91.8 Fanatics, with some trivia. The winner of this week’s trivia gets not only my undying love but a coupon redeemable for one free hug!

Match the following characters from these two series to their counterpart and explain why? Make sure to post your answers below. Here are your two series:

From Dragon Ball Z: Trunks, Chaotzu and Piccolo

From The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiy: Mikuru, Yuki and Koizumi.

———————————————————————————–

Now for the Round Table rules: As usual, each participant is given a series questions covering various aspects in anime, manga and Japanese culture. Each individual then has to provide their opinion on the said issue. Finally, I call in a special guest to write the next round table.

    Our Participants today are:

  • Kibs – One Fish
  • Kate – Two Fish
  • Leviathan mist – Red Fish
  • Marpolo – Blue Fish
  • Grimdefeat – Does not like green eggs and ham.
  • Zaburai – Does not like them on a plane.
  • ZshadowX – Does not like them on a train.
  • They Call Me The Fizz – Does not like them Sam I am.

What is your most memorable scene from an anime series or movie? When did you first watch this section?

  • Kibs – The ending to Eureka 7 is probably one of the most satisfying anime endings ever, it gave me everything I’d wanted out of the series, I first watched it about 3-4 years ago.
  • Kate – *WARNING! THIS MAY BE A LONG OVERDUE SPOILER, BUT I’M STILL WARNING PEOPLE! IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON WATCHING FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST OR JUST HAVEN’T GOTTEN TO THIS EARLY PART YET, SKIP MY ANSWER! Thank you.<3*
This will be a sad memorable scene for me. It's when Hughes died on Fullmetal Alchemist. It was a huge shock to fans while watching that episode. I remember just watching this episode when it came out on Adult Swim (the first series) and crying, yes, crying over how sad it was. Elicia's response at the funeral just really got to me. Sadly, this hasn't changed. I've seen this episode over five times and can't help but to cry a little. This was the first and only episode in anime that made me cry. So, it's something I can't help but remember.
  • Leviathan mist – A lot of anime have memorable scenes, so choosing the one that’s most memorable is difficult. However, there is one scene that always stands out to me as both my most memorable and my favorite scene: In The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, the battle between Yuki Nagato and Ryoko Asakura, and the events immediately following the battle. As many people who know me already know, the Haruhi Suzumiya series was the anime that got me to change my perception on anime completely, back in 2007. Before I watched it, I thought anime was just a cult thing, and when my friends made me watch it, I simply wasn’t all that interested. The fact is, there probably exists at least one anime for every demographic out there, you just have to know where to look.
  • Marpolo – My most memorable scene from an anime would be in the final episode of Gundam Wing where Wing Zero uses its twin buster rifle to destroy a section of a ship that was falling to earth threatening to wreak havoc to the ecosystem.
  • Grimdefeat – My most memorable scene would probably be when ash turns to stone in the first pokemon movie. When I first saw that I was like 9 and I started to tear up cus I was almost devastated at what had happened.
  • Zaburai – Well there are quite a few but I shall pick the most recent one I have experienced. That is of course….well okay I have 2. The first one is Wolfwood’s death in Trigun, it shows how human the character is, showing us that he wanted to do more, sure at the start he says he knew it was his time but straight after he shouts to God about how it isn’t fair. Top that on the fact that he was a very likable, slightly mysterious character and you have a memorable moment with him.

The second one is Angel Beats. I believe it is episode 8 when you find out Ootanashi’s past, first off of course you find out that he has a sick sister (surprise….). Of course what happens in the second half truly set this anime as a great anime. This is because Ootanishi starts studying to get into medical school so he can help other people like his sister. As he is on his way to the university the train crashes into a tunnel and they cannot escape. Of course everyone is panicking but Ootanashi
soon calms everyone down. As the days go on the stockpile of water runs low, Ootanshi does something that I haven’t seen in any other medium, put his name down on the organ donor list. Put as the rescue team move in he is unconscious and chances of surviving are slim. This was a truly moving scene, one of the best episodes of any anime I have ever seen truly brilliant.
  • ZshadowX – Oh that will be Princess Mononoke. There this one scene that Ashitaka shot this one arrow to this one guy, and his head came right off. And I was like WTF!!!! HEADSHOOT!!!!and I was thinking isn’t this a Studio Ghibi movie and there’s blood in this movie, and heads coming off, Holy SH………. No wonder this is not a Disney movie… wow wow oh WOW. What was I thinking showing this to my little sister. Still my family really did love that movie and they can’t stop talking about it how great it is.
  • They Call Me The Fizz – The ending of Akira where Tetsuo loses control and becomes a giant ball of hate-cancer. I first saw this when I was just 10 years old. My perception of animation changed forever that day.

Who would you list as the most untrustworthy character in anime. What have they done to earn this reputation and what series are they from?

  • Kibs – I really hate characters that, for some reason or another, betray the protagonist out of selfish desire.
  • Kate – Here’s the thing… I can’t really think of any. But, I’ll just throw out a quick one. I say doctors in any anime. Why? They usually seem to be evil and such. Like, they’re always good in the beginning, then the next episode or scene comes around and they got a needle that could kill someone or do something.
  • Leviathan mist – I probably couldn’t say reliably who the most untrustworthy character in anime is, but the most untrustworthy character I know about, again going back to the Haruhi Suzumiya series, is Ryoko Asakura. Again going back to the scene I mentioned above, when this girl who seems so warm and friendly all of a sudden turns into a cold-blooded killer.
  • Marpolo – The most untrustworthy character in an anime is that teacher from High School of the Dead, He’s cruel, manipulative, willing to sacrifice anyone to ensure his survival, spineless, kills those that don’t agree with him and willing to use a zombie apocalypse to his advantage.
  • Grimdefeat – I would actually have to put Aizen and Ichimaru at the top why because they turned on the soul society for 1 and for 2 I just don’t like them.
  • Zaburai – ….okay you stumped me on that one I can’t think of anyone. Generally they are too blatantly untrustworthy that I know what they are going to do so I don’t care for them (e.g. that glasses guy in High School of the Dead)
  • ZshadowX – Griffith (Berserk)…..I hate that guy, I hate hate hate him soooo much. You see he sacrifice his friends in order to fulfil his dream. His friends were like a family to him, and he just sacrifice them to the demons….. oh I really hate that that guy.
  • They Call Me The Fizz – Light Yagami of Death Note. Never before has there been a character so sure of himself and self-absorbed. I’m shocked so many people fall for a p###k in love with his own farts.

What is your favorite anime OST (Original Sound Track), how did it contribute to the experience of watching the series?

  • Kibs – I’m going to branch off into video games and say that the persona soundtracks (3 specifically) have always made the games far more enjoyable, as all of the music is catchy, and perfect for the atmosphere.
  • Kate – Geez, that’s hard. If I had to go with one series, I would go with all the .Hack// animes. The music helped with the feeling of the scenes. Though, ALI PROJECT made .Hack//Roots the best OST of the series for me.
  • Leviathan mist – I like a lot of anime soundtracks, even from anime I have never seen. Some of my favorites include Shakugan no Shana, ef: a tale of memories, Ga-Rei Zero, K-On, and Lucky Star. Usually, just liking an anime soundtrack isn’t enough to get me to enjoy the anime, because I like Japanese music in general.
  • Marpolo – I can’t really think of one.
  • Grimdefeat – I actually haven’t listened to any OST’s yet.
  • Zaburai – I would have to say Welcome to the NHK, that soundtrack is truly one of the greats, it adds to the atmosphere greatly add just adds to every scene.
  • ZshadowX – My Bride is a Mermaid OST, music to my ears, I don’t know how, but somehow it just make the anime more epic.
  • They Call Me The Fizz – Cowboy Bebop – I’m a sucker for Jazz and Blues

Which voice actor / television star / internet celebrity would you like to have the chance to chat to at an anime con and why?

  • Kibs – I sat in on a panel this past Metrocon in which Robert Axelrod explained ADR and script writing as it used to be in the olden days, and I would love to sit down with him and hear all of his stories about the industry as it used to be.
  • Kate – Johnny Yong Bosch. Why? To make my friend jealous. No, I wouldn’t be that evil (or, would I?). He’s actually one of my favorite voice actors. No, not for Ichigo Kurosaki. He has done plenty of voices for characters I like and was a POWER RANGER. I liked him as Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass), Vash the Stampede (Trigun), Kiba (Wolf’s Rain), Kuhn (.Hack//G.U.), Nero (Devil May Cry 4), and some others. I have never seen him yet compared to my other favorite people and would really love to.
  • Leviathan mist – Minori Chihara, hands down. She is my favorite VA, favorite singer, and favorite overall celebrity in general. If you spend time in the IRC channel, chances are you already know this about me. The character archetype she is known for voicing (the “Emotionless Girl” according to TV Tropes) is usually my favorite type of anime character, the one I can relate to most. It’s also nice to see when the emotionless girl actually develops emotions. Also, she is a great singer, and by the BGM she uses in her songs, you can tell she recognizes good music when she hears it.
  • Marpolo – There are so many that I wouldn’t be able to choose only one. Top 2 are

The Rooster Teeth crew because I just love Red vs Blue, the RT Shorts.and the comics they make especially the recent ones that referenced Plants vs Zombies.

Matt Hill because I really enjoy the characters that he has played such as Kira Yamato from Gundam Seed, Gundam Seed Destiny, Ed from Ed Edd n Eddy and Raphael from teenage mutant ninja turtles.

  • Grimdefeat – Probably Patrick Seitz I got too meet him once at an anime con but I didn’t really get a chance to ask him some questions about voice acting in not only bleach but also World of Warcraft.
  • Zaburai – Satoshi Kon….oh wait ;_; In that case it would be Steve Blum simply because I think he is the greatest VA out there because of his vocal range, now really how many people know that he is Guilmon?
  • ZshadowX – The one and only, the legend, my hero, the one, Todd Haberkorn. I just really love his voice
  • They Call Me The Fizz – Mark F’n Hamill – His voice work is unmatched in the field and a huge inspiration to me .

What is your most valuable (monetary or sentimental) anime / gaming related item?

  • Kibs – I’d have to say the limited edition Brutal Legend figure I won, courtesy of rooster teeth.
  • Kate – Want to know? It’s my Sailor Moon backpack. This was the first anime related item I got when I was a kid. I used that instead of my regular backpack and took it to school with me everyday until fifth grade. I loved that bag. I still do! It’s in my room right now. A little worn out from old age, but perfect to me. One of these days I’ll use again! Probably at my next convention.
  • Leviathan mist – I don’t usually collect expensive anime items that I can’t actually use. That being said, I do have a few posters/wallscrolls, but they aren’t valuable at all. As for games, I do have quite a few rare ones, my most valuable is probably my copy of Dragon Warrior VII for PS1, which has become a rare game these days.
  • Marpolo – My most valuable item would have to be Gundam Dynasty Warriors 2.
  • Grimdefeat – My first anime con badge because it basically was my way of finding out holy cow I’m an otaku and proud of it and now everytime I look at it I always remember how much my life has kinda changed thanks to anime.
  • Zaburai – …I don’t have a lot of anime/gaming items so it would have to be my French Paprika poster or my Wing Zero Custom 1/100 model they used to do back when Endless Waltz was new.
  • ZshadowX – I guess that will be my anime DVDs. I don’t have much, but the few I have are very special to me.
  • They Call Me The Fizz – My NES-themed messenger bag signed by Billy West (Voice of Phillip J. Fry of Futurama and Stimpy the Cat)

Are you enjoying any current anime series or are there any you are looking forward to that have yet to be released?

  • Kibs – I’m currently watching (and reviewing) Demon King Daimao. I don’t have much more time for anime these days, but I hope to be able to pick up another series or two sometime soon.
  • Kate – I am currently looking forward to the Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) pilot anime to come out. This was one of the manga series I’ve wanted to see an anime series or something to come out for it. Also, I’m looking forward to the final two episodes to the Tethe’alla arc of Tales of Symphonia: The Animation. Been a long wait, but it has been worth it to me. What am I enjoying now? I just got into Kaze no Stigma on Monday and I like it. NO SPOILING FOR ME OR I’LL COME LOOKING FOR YOU!
  • Leviathan mist – I’m always open to finding potential anime I might like, but the problem is that if I start watching something and it bores me, I won’t finish it. That’s why I haven’t had much to say about a lot of different anime series, because for most of the popular ones, I’ve only seen a few episodes of here and there, and none of them interested me enough to watch more. One new film I am especially looking forward to watching is The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.
  • Marpolo – I am really enjoying One Piece because they are showing the White Beard War on the Funimation web site, and Beach because they are finally airing new episodes on Adult Swim, after months of waiting.
  • Grimdefeat – The main series I am enjoying right now are Bleach and Hell Girl but there are a few others that I still am watching like speed grapher.
  • Zaburai – My favourite series from the last season was Shiki because it created a great moody atmosphere, the main characters are mostly likable and you never know what is going to happen next something you can’t say about any other horror franchise out there, also love the Buck-Tick opening Kuchizuke you hear that 918 you better get this song XD.
Ookami-san was another good series, sure it isn’t J.C.Staff’s greatest work but it was enjoyable none the less.
A big surprise for me was Seitokai Yakuindomo, no really it was a HUGE surprise. Why is this? Because it starts off too pervy and I kinda felt weird watching it but then something strange happened…it got really funny (this happened when their supervising teacher appeared, you will laugh at her giggles). Something else that is strange is even though it is soo pervy there is no nudity and it is pretty much fanservice free 0_o.
I was disappointed with Highschool of the Dead, it became all about the titties to the point where it was disgusting to watch, I could rage about it but I won’t.
So overall watch Shiki, Seitokai Yakuindomo and try out Ookami-san, you shant be disappointed.
  • ZshadowX – Well I’m currently watching Xam’d: Lost Memories and let me just say, if you watched Eureka Seven and love it, then this is the one that can come even close to E7. Like OMG this remind me of E7 so much. Same style art, it have some similar plot and its take place in the sky. Like wow, instead of Giant Robots on a surfing board they switch it to giant bugs.
  • They Call Me The Fizz – Heroman is the only current series holding my interests thanks in no small part to Stan “The Man” Lee’s involvement .

PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB will take a stab in the dark, never watched Haruhi Suzumiya, so here goes:

Trunks and Mikuru go together because they are both from the future (as long as we are talking about the trunks from the andriod/cell saga)

Piccolo and Koizumi because they are both not human, Piccolo being a Namekian and Koizumi being an Esper

Chaotzu and Yuki because they both observe/overlook everything, because they are lazy bums.

PiSsEdSiLeNtBoB thinks that is all, now where is Bob’s hug.

to Leviathan mist: I totally agree about being bored with anime and never finishing it. I cant even count how many animes i tried out but got bored with and just forgot about. Ive finished a bunch of animes but most of which are small 12 episode ones that nobody ever knows about. I used to be a bit Inuyasha junky because it was my first real anime but i stopped at episode 130 sumthin out of sheer boredom. I cant believe i even made it this far. i swear i almost broke my computer whenever Naraku appeared. i say hes one of the worst anime villians even though the worst thing he did was kill kikyo a few times which isnt that hard. Anyway! Im young and i just started otakuism (whatever you wanna call it) this past year so im basically a newby at this stuff. lol

    • Leviathan Mist September 23, 2010 at 12:50 PM

For real, man. If an anime is more than about 30 episodes, chances are I’ll never get through it 😛

  • Jubilee September 23, 2010 at 12:31 PM

    Psst…Mikuru-Piccolo…remember EE’s obsession with beams :O…

the other ones I have no clue about however 😛
